Struck by heavy rains, thunderstorms and strong winds, Delhi’s Indira Gandhi International Airport (IGIA) experienced flight diversions on Thursday, as some flights from Muscat and Phuket were also diverted. Heavy weather conditions caused major disruption to flight operations at Delhi’s Indira Gandhi International Airport on Thursday. According to reports, 13 incoming flights were forced to perform “go-arounds” after aborting their initial landing attempts due to poor visibility and unsafe weather conditions.

Additionally, 11 flights were diverted to alternate airports as heavy rain, thunderstorms, and strong winds affected air traffic movement across the national capital. The disruptions led to delays and travel inconvenience, prompting airlines and airport authorities to issue advisories for passengers.

Air India flight AI 422 from Amritsar, IndiGo flight 6E 1074 from Phuket, Oman Air flight WY 245 from Muscat and IndiGo flight 6E 6358 from Kolkata were among the flights diverted, the airport agency said. Rapid weather changes caused challenges for flight movement across the national capital area, forcing diversions.

What has Delhi airport advised in this regard?

Delhi Airport has advised passengers that flight arrivals and departures might be affected owing to the continuing weather disturbances at and around the city.

Airport authorities have been coordinating with airlines and other stakeholders to reduce disruption to passengers. The airport operator advised passengers to verify their flight status before heading to the airport and stay abreast of any changes via official airline helplines or websites, the airport said.

IndiGo and Air India reacted

IndiGo noted that current weather conditions over Delhi might affect flight schedules and deployed ground and flight teams to help stranded passengers. IndiGo has said it is monitoring the situation closely and will keep working it out.

Air India also issued a travel advisory, cautioning that incoming and outgoing flights could face delays or disruptions. The airline urged passengers to verify their flight status before heading to the airport.

SpiceJet released a similar advisory, warning that departures, arrivals, and connecting flights could be affected due to the weather conditions.

How Is the Weather Affecting Delhi-NCR?

The flight disruptions coincided with widespread rainfall across Delhi-NCR after weeks of intense summer heat. Several areas, including Alipur, Vivek Vihar, Narela, Shahdara, Civil Lines, and Model Town, witnessed moderate to heavy showers.

The India Meteorological Department (IMD) had earlier forecast thunderstorms, lightning, hailstorms, and moderate rainfall across Delhi and nearby regions. Gusty winds of 30-50 kmph were also predicted.

While the rain brought relief from soaring temperatures, authorities said weather conditions remain unstable. Passengers are advised to regularly monitor airline updates as further delays or diversions cannot be ruled out.
