Delhi, Faridabad, Gurugram Rains: A sudden spell of rain accompanied by strong winds and dark clouds brought much needed relief from the scorching heat across Delhi NCR on Thursday, but also led to waterlogging and traffic disruptions in several areas. Heavy clouds rolled in over parts of Gurugram, while falling rain was recorded at several places in south Delhi due to the strong dust storms that preceded them. The sharp temperature drop brought a drop in the visibility of the roads and caused some motorists to be delayed in the movement of traffic in several areas of the NCR. The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has warned people to stay alert during bad weather due to thunderstorm and gusty wind as well as rainfall alert issued by the department for the region.

The rainfall comes amid active western disturbance which has affected the weather situation in north India. The meteorological department has issued a yellow alert the period, with light to moderate rainfall, lightning and strong winds. The wet spell is expected to continue for the next two days with daytime temperatures below 40 degrees Celsius, relieving the extremely hot summer weather being experienced over the past few weeks in the region. Shortly after the showers started a few areas reported an overcast sky and cooler temperatures.

Delhi, Faridabad, Gurugram Rains: The Problem Of Water logging

The sudden downpour also highlighted the frequent urban challenges such as water logging in parts of Delhi NCR in low lying areas and congested roads. Rain also made roads slippery, resulting in delays for commuters in their rush to work. The city’s residents posted photos on social media of streets flooded and traffic jams, and civic agencies scouted risk areas to avoid large scale disruptions. Short duration but intense rainfall events may result in temporary flooding in areas with heavy population density in urban areas, especially if the drainage system cannot remove the excess water in a timely manner, weather experts noted.

Delhi, Faridabad, Gurugram Rains: Last Week Temperature

Weather would remain stable from June 7 onwards with improvement in the sky visibility over the weekend, according to IMD. With less rain in the forecast with the coming days, temperatures are expected to go up once more and may touch the 40 degree Celsius mark. Before the shift in the weather, on Wednesday, Delhi had been experiencing high humidity levels with a max temperature of 39.1 degrees Celsius and a minimum temperature of 27.4 degrees Celsius. For the present, the citizens are getting some relief from the heat but authorities are still cautioning them of the threat of more thunderstorms, strong wind and localised waterlogging in the Delhi NCR region.
