Visitors to the lawyers’ canteen at the Delhi High Court are currently unable to order popular hot dishes after a shortage of LPG cylinders forced the facility to suspend cooking operations. As a result, regular menu favourites such as biryani, dal makhani and shahi paneer are temporarily unavailable.

Many lawyers arrived at the canteen around lunchtime expecting the usual hot meals but instead found the menu drastically reduced. The sudden disruption quickly became a topic of discussion in the court corridors as advocates adjusted their lunch plans.

Delhi LPG Cylinder Shortage: Only Light Meals Available

Until gas supplies return to normal, the canteen will continue offering items that do not require cooking gas. Customers can still order lighter options including sandwiches, salads and fruit chaat, which are currently the only refreshments available.

The government has also prioritised LPG supplies for households and key non-domestic sectors such as hospitals and educational institutions. In addition, natural gas distribution has been rationed to ensure priority for piped household supply, vehicles using CNG and facilities producing cooking gas.

The rationing measures were announced after disruptions to liquefied natural gas shipments through the Strait of Hormuz caused by the ongoing regional conflict raised concerns over fuel availability.

Against this backdrop, the Ministry of Petroleum and Natural Gas recently said the government is pushing refineries to increase LPG production and divert additional output for domestic consumption. Authorities have also introduced a 25-day gap between LPG bookings to prevent hoarding and black marketing.
