Delhi-NCR Heavy Rain Today: Delhi’s Janmashtami celebrations came with a dramatic change in weather on Friday, September 4, as a spell of heavy rain quickly turned several parts of the capital into waterlogged zones. Among the most striking visuals that emerged from the downpour were videos from Indira Gandhi International Airport, where passengers and airport staff could be seen moving through waterlogged areas with luggage.
The rain affected more than roads and residential areas. Flight operations also faced disruption as nine flights were diverted between 3:30 pm and 4:30 pm because of adverse weather conditions. Four flights went to Jaipur, four to Lucknow and one to Ahmedabad, according to an airport source cited by Times Now.
The India Meteorological Department (IMD) also intensified its warning for Delhi, issuing a red alert as thunderstorms and more heavy rainfall threatened the national capital. Noida and Ghaziabad in Uttar Pradesh remained under an orange warning.
Delhi-NCR Heavy Rain Today: Delhi Airport Waterlogging After Heavy Rain
The most visible impact of Friday’s downpour appeared at IGI Airport, where videos showed water covering parts of the airport premises.
Passengers were seen pulling luggage trolleys through ankle-deep water while airport employees continued working around the affected areas. The visuals quickly spread across social media and triggered criticism of the city’s drainage and infrastructure.
The situation also created difficulties for passengers waiting to enter or leave the airport.
One passenger described the experience while speaking to ANI, “I’ve never seen anything like this; there is so much water. I’ve been standing here for about half an hour now. I am waiting for the water level to recede a bit so I can head towards the arrival gates.”

The waterlogging came after several hours of rain across Delhi-NCR, with the airport among the locations where the effects of the weather became particularly visible. Similar rain-related disruption has affected Delhi Airport during earlier monsoon spells as well.
Delhi-NCR Heavy Rain Today: 9 Flights Diverted From Delhi Airport
The bad weather also affected air travel.
According to an airport source cited by Times Now, nine flights were diverted during the 3:30 pm to 4:30 pm period.
The diversions included:
- 4 flights to Jaipur
- 4 flights to Lucknow
- 1 flight to Ahmedabad
The diversions came as heavy rain, thunderstorms and deteriorating weather conditions affected operations around Delhi.
Air India also warned passengers about possible disruption. The airline said flight operations to and from Delhi could be affected because of the adverse weather and advised travellers to keep checking their flight status.
The latest disruption follows repeated weather-related travel advisories issued for Delhi during the monsoon season.
Delhi-NCR Heavy Rain Today: IMD Red Alert for Delhi, Orange Warning for Noida and Ghaziabad
The weather department stepped up its warning as rain intensified across the capital.
The IMD issued a red alert for Delhi, warning of intense rainfall along with thunderstorms, lightning and gusty winds. Noida and Ghaziabad were placed under an orange alert, while Gurugram did not have a warning in the update cited in reports.
The weather system brought a noticeable change from the humid conditions Delhi had experienced in recent days. However, the relief from the heat came with waterlogging, traffic problems and difficulties for commuters and air passengers.
Reports also indicated that the weather could remain unsettled through the weekend, although the intensity of rainfall is expected to change as the system moves away.
Delhi-NCR Heavy Rain Today: Social Media Reacts to Delhi Airport Waterlogging
Videos of passengers navigating the waterlogged airport quickly attracted reactions online.
Several users questioned how a major airport could face such visible waterlogging after a spell of heavy rain.
One user wrote, “After 7.8 per cent GDP, the government couldn’t resist providing luxurious amenities.”
Another commented, “World-class infrastructure.”
A third user added, “This is exactly what we don’t want.”
The reactions reflected wider frustration over waterlogging in Delhi, where heavy monsoon showers frequently put pressure on roads, drains and transport infrastructure.
Delhi-NCR Heavy Rain Today: Delhi-NCR Roads Also Struggle With Heavy Rain
The airport was not the only part of the region affected.
Several areas across Delhi-NCR experienced waterlogging after the rain, with videos showing vehicles moving through flooded roads. Traffic movement slowed at several locations as commuters dealt with standing water.
Noida and Ghaziabad also witnessed heavy showers while remaining under the IMD’s orange warning. Reports said the weather department expected additional rainfall and thunderstorms in the region.
The sudden intensity of the rain once again highlighted the difference between receiving rainfall and managing its impact in a densely populated metropolitan region.
Delhi-NCR Heavy Rain Today: How Much Rain Did Delhi Receive?
Rainfall measurements varied considerably across Delhi’s monitoring stations.
According to three-hourly rainfall data cited in PTI reports, Palam recorded 3.4 mm between 11:30 am and 2:30 pm, while Najafgarh recorded 0.5 mm between 8:30 am and 11:30 am.
Other monitoring stations recorded little or no rainfall during the corresponding periods.
However, rainfall intensity changed later in the day, with heavier showers affecting several parts of the capital and NCR.

Delhi-NCR Heavy Rain Today: Delhi Had Already Recorded Excess August Rainfall
Friday’s downpour came after an unusually wet August for Delhi.
The capital recorded 354.1 mm of rainfall between August 1 and August 30, compared with the IMD’s long-period average of 233.1 mm for August. That placed the month’s rainfall more than 120 mm above the long-term average in the period cited.
Delhi also recorded high August rainfall totals in 2025 and 2024, when the city received 400.81 mm and 390.3 mm, respectively.
According to IMD data, Delhi has crossed its August rainfall long-period average only six times since 2011 — in 2012, 2013, 2020, 2024, 2025 and 2026.
Recent data also showed that the rainfall pattern has remained uneven across the region. Delhi received above-normal rain while some neighbouring areas recorded deficits.
Delhi-NCR Heavy Rain Today: Why Delhi’s Heavy Rain Matters for Airport Operations?
Heavy rain can affect airport operations in several ways. Poor visibility, thunderstorms, strong winds, standing water and difficult road access can all create problems for passengers and airlines.
Friday’s events showed how quickly a weather disturbance can move beyond city roads and affect a major transport hub.
For passengers travelling through Delhi Airport, airlines have advised checking flight status before leaving for the airport and allowing additional travel time during periods of severe weather.
For now, the focus remains on the weather system and whether another spell of heavy rain will bring fresh waterlogging across Delhi-NCR.
