Delhi Orange Alert: After heavy rain and hail in the national capital, Delhi’s Indira Gandhi International Airport witnessed a significant flight disruption on Tuesday. The schedule of flights was disrupted due to adverse weather conditions, which made it difficult for flight operations. Delhi Orange Alert: Why have Flights been Cancelled?
The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued an orange alert due to heavy rainfall and hail, and as a result, over 500 flights faced delays, and multiple flights were diverted on May 05.
The situation was further exacerbated by the drone attack in the Middle East, due to which the number of flight cancellations rose.
According to the flight data, the situation became chaotic at the airport after nearly 500 flights ran later than schedule, and at least 10 were cancelled, and five were diverted to nearby airports.
Amidst the hailstorm, the areas around the airport, specifically parts of Dwarka, Palam and Najafgarh, airport authorities diverted flights to nearby airports and delayed operations of several others.
Delhi airport saw 10 flight cancellations of those that were scheduled to and from airports in West Asia since 11:00 PM on May 04. This included six flights from Dubai, Abu Dhabi, Kuwait and Baghdad to Delhi and four flights from Delhi to these locations.
Delhi Orange Alert: Will there be more flight disruptions?
The IMD department has lifted the rainfall alert and has issued no colour-coded warning for Wednesday. It is forecasted that the weather conditions will be partly cloudy during the day.
According to the Meteorological Department, the weather office forecasted the possibility of thundery weather conditions towards late evening in view of the prevailing western disturbance.
The western disturbance will most likely withdraw by Thursday, and the mercury is expected to spike again.
Delhi residents can expect a gradual rise in maximum temperatures by 4-5°C during the coming 4 days.

As of May 05 to 06, 2026, the India Meteorological Department (IMD) issued an Orange Alert for Delhi-NCR, warning of heavy rain, moderate thunderstorms, lightning, and gusty winds up to 60 kmph.
The alert covers all areas, including Central, West, North West, North East, Shahdara, East, and parts of South/South West Delhi.
