Heavy rain lashed Delhi and the National Capital Region (NCR) on Thursday morning, bringing relief from the recent hot and humid weather but causing widespread waterlogging, traffic congestion and travel disruptions. The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has placed Delhi under an Orange Alert, forecasting light to moderate rainfall along with thunderstorms, lightning and strong winds on July 9. Several neighbouring districts have also been placed under a Red Alert, indicating the possibility of extremely heavy rainfall.
According to the IMD, Delhi’s maximum temperature is expected to remain around 27°C, while the minimum temperature is likely to stay close to 26°C. The rain has brought significant relief from the intense heat and humidity experienced earlier this week.
Which Areas Will Receive Heavy Rain?
Private weather agency Skymet has predicted heavier rainfall in parts of the NCR over the next 24 hours. East Delhi, East NCR, Noida, Ghaziabad, Baghpat and Meerut could receive 180 mm to 250 mm of rainfall. Meanwhile, Central Delhi, Gurugram, Faridabad and nearby areas may receive 80 mm to 150 mm of rain.
Waterlogging Disrupts Traffic Across Delhi-NCR
Continuous rainfall led to severe waterlogging in several parts of Delhi, affecting morning traffic. Water accumulated near New Delhi Railway Station, Munirka, and other low-lying areas, causing long traffic jams and delays. In Gurugram, traffic moved slowly on several major roads, including the Delhi-Jaipur Highway near Narsinghpur, Basai, Kadipur, Umang Bhardwaj Chowk, Sector-10A and Sohna Road.
Are Schools Closed Today?
Ghaziabad has declared a holiday for all schools from Classes 1 to 12 across every education board due to heavy rainfall. At present, no city-wide holiday has been announced for schools in Delhi. However, authorities are closely monitoring the weather situation, and individual schools may decide to suspend offline classes or switch to online learning if rainfall intensifies.
Gurugram Police Advises Work From Home
To reduce traffic congestion caused by waterlogging, Gurugram Police has advised private companies to allow employees to work from home for two days, wherever possible. The advisory aims to reduce unnecessary travel during the ongoing spell of heavy rain.
Flight Advisory Issued For Delhi Airport
Heavy rainfall has also affected travel to Indira Gandhi International Airport (IGI). Airlines, including Air India and IndiGo, have advised passengers to check their flight status before leaving for the airport and allow extra travel time because of waterlogged roads and slow moving traffic. Flight operations are continuing, but passengers may experience delays while travelling to the airport.
Delhi Weather Forecast Till July 13
The IMD has predicted that rain and thunderstorms will continue across Delhi-NCR over the next few days. Heavy showers are likely on July 10 and July 11, accompanied by strong winds of 40-50 kmph. Rainfall is expected to reduce on July 12 and July 13, although isolated showers may continue in some parts of the region.
