Delhi Weather Update: Heavy rain lashed several parts of Delhi-NCR on Tuesday, bringing the biggest rainfall spell of the season and providing much needed relief from the humid weather. According to weather officials, parts of the city recorded around 84 mm of rainfall, making it the rainiest day of the year so far. The heavy rain also pushed humidity levels close to 100% in many areas. The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a two day Yellow Alert and predicted more rain, thunderstorms and gusty winds over the next four days. The showers also caused a sharp fall in temperatures across the national capital.
The rain brought a significant drop in temperatures across Delhi. At Safdarjung, temperatures fell by nearly 10°C between 1:00 pm and 2:30 pm, bringing the average temperature down to around 22°C during the rainfall. Before the showers, the maximum temperature had reached 37.2°C, which was slightly above normal. The minimum temperature stood at 30°C, making it the hottest July night in Delhi in the past two years.
What Is The Latest IMD Forecast?
The India Meteorological Department has forecast cloudy skies, rain and thunderstorms over Delhi for the next four days. A Yellow Alert has been issued for Wednesday and Thursday. The IMD expects light rain in many areas, moderate showers in some places, thunderstorms, lightning and gusty winds reaching speeds of up to 50 kmph. Rain is also likely during the evening and night.
According to the IMD, light rainfall is expected to continue on Friday and Saturday as well. Maximum temperatures are likely to remain between 32°C and 34°C, while minimum temperatures may stay between 21°C and 23°C over the next two days.
According to Skymet Weather, the ongoing rainfall is being caused by a combination of multiple weather systems. These include a western disturbance over northern Pakistan, a low pressure area over Madhya Pradesh, and moist monsoon winds from the Arabian Sea, which are together bringing continuous rain over Delhi-NCR.
What Is Delhi’s Air Quality Like?
Despite the heavy rain, Delhi’s air quality remained in the moderate category. According to the Central Pollution Control Board (CPCB), the city’s Air Quality Index (AQI) was recorded at 113. An AQI between 101 and 200 is classified as moderate.
