Delhi Weather Today (August 14): The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued red and orange alerts for multiple regions in Delhi and nearby regions today (August 14). According to the weather department,  an active monsoon trough, along with a western disturbance, will bring moderate to heavy rain, thunderstorms, and high winds to Delhi and the neighbouring areas for the upcoming days.

Delhi Weather Today (August 14): Why Is the City Expected to Receive Heavy Rain Today?

The monsoon trough at mean sea level currently stretches from Amritsar through Bareilly, Varanasi and Ranchi before reaching a depression over Jharkhand and adjoining Gangetic West Bengal. It then extends southeastwards towards the northwest Bay of Bengal. This active weather system is expected to enhance rainfall activity across several parts of north India, including Delhi-NCR. A western disturbance, persisting as a trough in the middle and upper levels of the atmosphere, is further supporting the development of unstable weather conditions.

What Has IMD Warned About Rain, Thunderstorms and Winds?

According to the weather forecast, several parts of Delhi-NCR could experience heavy to very heavy rainfall accompanied by thunderstorms, lightning and gusty winds. The western disturbance is positioned at around 5.8 km above mean sea level. Its interaction with the monsoon circulation is creating favourable conditions for widespread thunderstorms and intense rainfall. Areas under a red alert face the possibility of extremely heavy rainfall and significant disruption, while districts under an orange alert have been advised to remain prepared for potentially severe weather.

What Weather Conditions Can Delhi Expect Today?

The combination of abundant moisture and atmospheric instability is likely to sustain intense rainfall activity across the region. The upper-air cyclonic circulation that was earlier present over south Haryana and adjoining areas has become less marked, but favourable conditions for heavy rain continue. The rainfall is also expected to bring some relief from high temperatures, resulting in cooler conditions across Delhi-NCR. However, intense showers could create temporary disruptions to normal life.

Delhi Weather Today (August 14): Could Heavy Rain Cause Waterlogging and Traffic Disruptions?

Indeed, torrential rain can result in water pooling, excess traffic, poor visibility or flooding in some regions, especially in low-lying areas. Travellers should plan their journeys with caution and be attentive to the evolving weather conditions. Citizens must be sure to check the news from IMD regarding travelling during severe rain or thunderstorms.
