Delhi witnessed another spell of heavy rainfall on Saturday, with the capital recording its wettest 24-hour period in August in two years. Safdarjung, the city’s base weather station, received 98.7 mm of rainfall between 8.30 am on Friday and 8.30 am on Saturday, according to weather data. The higher single-day rainfall recorded in August was last reported in 2024, when Safdarjung received 107.6 mm of rain on August 1. The persistent showers have pushed Delhi’s rainfall total for August close to the monthly normal, while the India Meteorological Department (IMD) has forecast more light rain in the coming days.

How Much Rain Has Delhi Received In August So Far?

Safdarjung has recorded 230.1 mm of rainfall in August so far, accounting for 98.7% of the normal rainfall of 233.1 mm for the entire month. Several parts of Delhi recorded heavy to very heavy rainfall in the 24 hours ending at 8.30 am Saturday.

The rainfall recorded at various stations included:

•    Pushp Vihar: 165 mm
•    Chhatarpur: 138 mm
•    Ayanagar: 115 mm
•    Palam: 104.6 mm
•    Najafgarh: 103.5 mm
•    Janakpuri: 102.5 mm
•    Safdarjung: 98.7 mm
•    Ridge: 89.8 mm
•    Lodhi Road: 86.8 mm

Pushp Vihar also witnessed another spell of heavy rainfall on Saturday, recording 65.5 mm between 8.30 am and 5.30 pm. During the same period, Najafgarh received 26 mm, Ayanagar 16 mm, Ridge 9.4 mm, Lodhi Road 6.5 mm and Pusa 5 mm. Safdarjung and Palam recorded 4.4 mm each.

What Is The Delhi Weather Forecast For The Coming Days?

The IMD has forecast very light to light rainfall from Sunday through August 14. No colour-coded rainfall warning has been issued by the weather department for the period from Sunday onwards. The maximum temperature is expected to remain between 33°C and 35°C over the next few days, while the minimum temperature is likely to stay between 23°C and 25°C.

Despite the rainfall, Delhi’s heat index, or “feels-like temperature”, reached 44.7°C at 2.30 pm on Saturday. The maximum temperature climbed to 32.8°C, which was around one degree below normal. This was a notable rise after the maximum temperature remained below 30°C for two consecutive days. Delhi recorded a maximum of 27.6°C on Thursday and 27.5°C on Friday.

High humidity following rainfall can make conditions feel significantly warmer than the actual air temperature, which contributes to a higher heat index. Delhi’s air quality remained in the ‘satisfactory’ category for the ninth consecutive day. The city recorded an Air Quality Index (AQI) of 63 on Saturday, unchanged from Friday.
