Delhi-NCR is expected to witness more rain over the coming days as the India Meteorological Department (IMD) has forecast thunderstorms, lightning and heavy showers across the region. Rain, thunderstorms and lightning are expected at some places from July 6, while rainfall activity is likely to increase from July 7. According to the IMD, wet weather may continue until July 11. The weather department has also issued an orange alert for Monday, warning of moderate to heavy rain, while flight operations and road traffic may continue to face disruptions due to changing weather conditions.
The weather department said Delhi may receive isolated to scattered rainfall on July 6 and July 10. Rainfall is expected to become heavier between July 7 and July 9, before increasing again on July 11, when many parts of the city could receive widespread showers. The IMD has also warned of isolated heavy rainfall over Delhi and nearby areas between July 6 and July 9, as well as on July 11.
Which Areas Could Witness Strong Winds?
Apart from rain, the IMD has forecast strong winds across several parts of Delhi. Wind speeds of 40-50 kmph, with gusts reaching 60 kmph, are likely over South East Delhi, East Delhi, Shahdara, Central Delhi, North East Delhi, South Delhi, New Delhi, South West Delhi, West Delhi, North West Delhi and North Delhi.
Heavy rain is also expected in neighbouring states. Haryana, Chandigarh and Punjab may receive isolated to scattered rainfall on July 6 and July 10. In Rajasthan, monsoon activity is expected to remain strong. The IMD has predicted isolated very heavy rainfall over East Rajasthan from July 6 to July 10, followed by heavy showers on July 11.
How Was Delhi’s Weather On Sunday?
Delhi recorded its warmest July day in two years on Sunday, with the maximum temperature reaching 38.6°C. During the afternoon, several areas received moderate rain. Chhatarpur recorded the highest rainfall in Delhi-NCR with 49 mm till 2.30 pm. Waterlogging was reported in parts of Chhatarpur after the showers. Other areas also received rainfall. Gurugram recorded 35 mm, followed by Mehrauli (18 mm), Greater Noida (17 mm), Najafgarh (8 mm) and Janakpuri (7 mm). The minimum temperature in Delhi was 29.2°C, which was above normal. Relative humidity reached 92% by evening, making the weather hot and humid despite the rain.
Why Has The IMD Issued An Orange Alert?
The IMD has placed Delhi under an orange alert for Monday. The department has forecast a generally cloudy sky with moderate rain throughout the day. The maximum temperature is expected to remain around 32°C, while the minimum temperature could settle near 27°C. The orange alert has been issued because of the possibility of heavy rain, thunderstorms and strong winds in parts of the city.
Bad weather disrupted flight operations at Delhi’s Indira Gandhi International Airport (IGI) on Saturday evening. According to airport officials, 15 Delhi-bound flights had to be diverted because of poor weather conditions. Out of these, nine flights were diverted to Jaipur, two each to Amritsar and Lucknow, while one flight each was diverted to Mumbai and Chandigarh. Airport authorities said flight schedules may continue to be affected depending on the weather. Air India has advised passengers travelling to and from Delhi and Mumbai to check their flight status before leaving for the airport. IndiGo also issued a travel advisory, asking passengers to check the latest flight updates through its website or mobile app before travelling.
