Vijay, Tamil Nadu Chief Minister and founder of Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK), is facing criticism from VCK leader Thirumavalavan regarding a specific hand gesture he made during his recent speech in the state Assembly. The controversy began on September 7 after Vijay engaged in a debate over grants allocation for the Police Department, which raised both eyebrows and political debates, as DMK members and Left–wing parties stated that Vijay disrespected former Chief Minister of Tamil Nadu, MK Stalin, through that gesture. The controversy gained further attention when Vijay centered his remarks around the Maintenance of Internal Security Act (MISA) in his speech in the assembly

What Was Vijay’s Assembly Gesture Controversy About?

Vijay moved his jaw when referring to the MISA, but the leaders of DMK and Left parties interpreted this movement and considered it to be touching the incident in which Stalin went through during Emergency. The incident of Emergency was when Stalin got arrested under MISA and beaten up while in detention, and as a result of that incident he reportedly ended up hurting his jaw. Because of this connection, the political opponent Vijay thought that this gesture was insensitive when it was meant to refer to previous Chief Minister‘s incident in the past. Afterward, this incident was politicized and people questioned the appropriateness of the movement when being a Chief Minister at the Assembly.

Why Did VCK Chief Thirumavalavan Criticise Vijay?

VCK leader and aide Thirumavalavan condemned the act, indicating that political representatives must act with respect in public discussions. The VCK opinion holds that any gesture like this would be “against human dignity” and states that political commentary must not cause embarrassment to someone personally. Thirumavalavan emphasized that the public representatives who exercise power in a governing role must be cautious with their speech and gesture.

What Did Vijay Say About the Controversial Gesture?

Vijay issued a statement clarifying the incident in response to the backlash he received. According to the leader of the TVK party, the gesture “was not intended to mean anything” and that it should not be taken as an effort to offend or insult anyone. Vijay claimed that the body movement was accidental and did not signify anything. His explanation followed reactions of the opposition and political organizations regarding the gesture.

What Did Thirumavalavan Say About Vijay’s Explanation?

Thirumavalavan accepted the clarification but stated that people in power should continue to construe their words with care. The VCK leader made a distinction between political critique and actions or statements capable of harming someone’s honor as he said on X. “Political condemnations of an individual constitute one thing, while criticisms, which result in humiliation of an individual, is entirely different,” he noted. Thirumavalavan went on to state that disparagement even of an individual holding a humble position or having a different political stance is not permissible in politics.

What Did Thirumavalavan Say About MK Stalin and MISA?

The VCK leader disapproved of statements made by Nirmal Kumar, Tamil Nadu’s Law Minister, during the recent Assembly proceedings. The issue pertains to the Emergency period and the imposition of MISA laws against political opponents. According to Thirumavalavan, the persecution experienced by political personalities at that time, including MK Stalin, has been well–documented in history. He raised objection about what he termed false information about Stalin’s experience during the MISA era being entered into the Assembly records. He condemned the statements made by the minister and urged him to retract his statements.

What Is the Political Dispute Between Vijay and MK Stalin?

The controversy took root in an era of fierce political rivalry between Vijay’s TVK and the DMK party of MK Stalin. Vijay has become one of the most prominent leaders in Tamil Nadu politics since entering politics via TVK. The controversy surrounding the Assembly gesture gives one more dimension to the acrimony accompanying the rivalry of Vijay and the DMK. While the former claims that what he did was simply an accident, representatives of various political entities, including the DMK and Left parties, continue to raise their concerns about the appropriateness of Vijay’s actions.

Why Did DMK Demand Action Over Vijay’s Assembly Speech?

The controversy also led to demands from DMK legislators that certain portions of Vijay’s Assembly speech be removed from the official records. The demand reflects the wider dispute over whether Vijay’s comments and body language crossed the limits of acceptable political criticism. With the VCK also raising concerns about dignity and personal respect, the incident has become a significant political controversy in the Tamil Nadu Assembly.

What Happens Next in the Vijay-MK Stalin Row?

Currently Vijay has turned down any intention to hurt MK Stalin. In the meantime, Thirumavalavan has stressed that political figures need to act with more decorum and dignity. It appears that this confrontation will continue affecting political discussions in Tamil Nadu, as TVK and DMK are engaged in various political disputes. This scandal raises a bigger question regarding the limits of political criticism and when it shifts to personal attacks. Thirumavalavan’s statements imply that public officials should be more careful and avoid statements or actions that can be regarded as offending someone, even in case they do not agree with his or her political views.
