India celebrates Independence Day every year on August 15 to commemorate its freedom from British rule in 1947. However, the date was not originally intended to be India’s Independence Day. The British government had initially planned to transfer power by June 30, 1948, but the rapidly deteriorating political and communal situation led to the timeline being brought forward by nearly 10 months.
When Lord Louis Mountbatten arrived in India as the last Viceroy in March 1947, he was tasked with overseeing the transfer of power. Britain had set June 1948 as the deadline. However, Mountbatten soon concluded that waiting that long could further worsen the political crisis and communal violence across the country.
Why Was India’s Independence Date Brought Forward?
The political situation had become increasingly unstable, with the Indian National Congress and the Muslim League struggling to work together in the interim government. At the same time, the demand for a separate Pakistan had intensified and communal violence was spreading across several regions.
Mountbatten believed that delaying the transfer of power could lead to greater unrest and make the situation increasingly difficult for the British administration to control. He therefore decided to accelerate the process and set August 1947 as the new deadline for the transfer of power.
Why Was August 15 Chosen For India’s Independence?
August 15 was selected by Mountbatten himself. The date had particular significance for him because it marked the second anniversary of Japan’s surrender to the Allied forces in 1945 during World War II. Mountbatten had served as the Supreme Allied Commander of the Southeast Asia Command during the war, and Japan’s surrender on August 15, 1945, was a significant milestone in his military career.
The date therefore had personal and historical significance for Mountbatten and was chosen for India’s transfer of power.
Was India’s Independence Originally Planned For June 30, 1948?
Yes. British Prime Minister Clement Attlee had announced in February 1947 that power would be transferred to Indian hands by June 1948. However, Mountbatten brought the deadline forward after assessing the worsening political and security situation. India eventually became independent on August 15, 1947, while Partition led to the creation of Pakistan on August 14.
Why Was The Independence Ceremony Held At Midnight?
The timing of the Independence ceremony was also influenced by Indian traditions and beliefs. August 15 was considered inauspicious according to some Hindu astrological calculations. To address this, the transfer of power was formally marked around midnight between August 14 and 15. Jawaharlal Nehru delivered his famous “Tryst with Destiny” speech shortly before midnight, as India prepared to enter a new era as an independent nation. India officially became independent at midnight, with the celebrations continuing throughout August 15.
What Is The Significance Of August 15 Today?
August 15 is observed as India’s Independence Day every year. The day commemorates the end of British colonial rule and the beginning of India’s journey as an independent nation. The Prime Minister traditionally hoists the national flag at the Red Fort in New Delhi and addresses the nation, while flag hoisting ceremonies, cultural programmes and patriotic events are held across the country.
