After months of internal Congress face-off and intense leadership struggle inside the party’s Karnataka unit, on Wednesday, D K Shivakumar took oath as new chief minister. The Congress’s landslide victory in Karnataka assembly elections in 2023 compelled the party to come to an internal agreement to share the chief minister post between Siddaramaiah and D K Shivakumar dividing the term into two phases
Congress MLA T B Jayachandra said that the high command has sanctioned the cabinet ‘schedule’ with the first ‘batch’ of ministers taking oath along with the chief minister and a second phase after June 18 after Rajya Sabha elections
The oath-taking ceremony at Lok Bhavan Bengaluru was graced by Rahul Gandhi and Mallikarjun Kharge and CM’s from all congress ruled states along with various religious leaders, students farmers Dalit leaders and Kannada activists.
What’s next for Karnataka politics after June 18?
After the elections for Legislative Council and Rajya Sabha end after June 18 the Congress would then move forward with the second phase of cabinet expansion finalising the government formation under Shivakumar’s leadership.
DK Shivakumar taking charge marks a major moment for Karnataka Congress as the leadership transition ends months of uncertainty and factional negotiations within the party. The new government is expected to focus on governance development welfare schemes and political stability in the state while balancing expectations from different groups within the Congress organisation in coming months.Â
