The video of Muslim community in Uttar Pradesh’s Mughalsarai voluntarily demolishing some parts of a mosque after receiving a warning from the Yogi Adityanath government has been resurfaced on social media platforms, reigniting the controversy. The video has been posted by a number of users who allege the incident took place in recent times and the committee of the mosque was pressured by the administration. But a fact check shows that the video is not recent and doesn’t show a latest occasion.

What Happened Here?
In the viral clip, workers are seen demolishing the minarets of a mosque and a bulldozer is seen on the ground nearby. The social media posts with the video state that the administration had asked for the encroachment to be removed and that the mosque committee toppled sections of the building in order to prevent ‘bulldozing’. The video is being shared as an ongoing process, and some comments reference a crackdown on illegal structures in Uttar Pradesh. But investigations reveal that this actually happened in May 2026 and is being incorrectly being pitched as ‘recent’.
Where Is The Video From?
The video is from Mughalsarai (presently Pandit Deen Dayal Upadhyaya Nagar) in Chandauli district of Uttar Pradesh. The Public Works Department (PWD) had then pinpointed certain areas of the historic Jama Masjid which allegedly overhung onto government land slated for road expansion. A notice was issued by the authorities, to stop the mosque management committee from constructing the disputed structures in a defined period. The committee decided at the time not to join in any government led efforts to destroy the mosque in the event of widespread damage and opted to remove three minarets on its own.
What Did The Masjid Committee Say?
According to a report by Zee News, Mohammad Mobin, committee secretary of the Jama Masjid, had earlier said that it had been taken under protest. He said the entire structure was probably in jeopardy if the administration had acted as a bulldozer. The committee was responsible for removing the damaged minarets, so as to minimize damage. Throughout the operation, a bulldozer was kept at the site to clear any debris and make sure the traffic flow around is smooth. The action took place under administrative supervision and was extensively reported in the local and national media in early month of May 2026.
Fact Check Results
Hence it is wrong to say that the Muslims demolished a mosque in Mughalsarai recently on the orders of Yogi Adityanath government. The viral video isn’t a new incident, but rather a clip from a demolition that took place over three years ago, which was done after an encroachment dispute. The committee of the mosque did take the parts of the building, but the presentation of the event is done out of context in order to give a false impression about recent developments. Users should check the date and background of the viral videos before sharing them online.
