FASTag OneTag: For many FASTag users, changing the bank linked to the vehicle has meant an unnecessary extra task, closing the old account, getting a fresh tag and removing the sticker from the windscreen. The government has now introduced a simpler option. OneTag, a new FASTag portability facility, allows motorists to change the issuing bank while continuing to use the same physical FASTag.

Union Road Transport and Highways Minister Nitin Gadkari launched the facility at the Global Fintech Fest 2026 in Mumbai on September 11.

The facility is available through the RajmargYatra app and is designed to work much like mobile number portability. Instead of replacing the tag, users can request a transfer to another eligible bank after completing the required verification and settlement process. The existing Tag ID and vehicle registration number remain unchanged after successful portability.

FASTag OneTag: What is OneTag and Why is it Important?

OneTag is a new portability system for NETC FASTag that gives vehicle owners more flexibility when choosing their issuing bank. Earlier, motorists generally had to close their existing FASTag account and complete a fresh onboarding process to move to another bank. That also meant getting another physical FASTag and replacing the sticker on the vehicle.

With OneTag, the physical tag can stay on the windscreen. The user only needs to initiate the portability request and select another participating bank through the RajmargYatra app. The initiative has been jointly developed by Indian Highways Management Company Limited (IHMCL) and the National Payments Corporation of India (NPCI).

FASTag OneTag: How To Port FASTag To Another Bank

The process is designed to be completed digitally through the RajmargYatra app. Here is how users can initiate the FASTag bank change.

Step 1: Open RajmargYatra App

Open the RajmargYatra app and sign in using the mobile number registered with your FASTag. Look for the OneTag option on the home screen and select it.

Tap Check Portability to begin the process.

Step 2: Enter Your Vehicle Registration Number

Select Get Started and enter your vehicle registration number. The system will check whether the existing FASTag can be ported to another eligible issuer.

If the tag meets the required conditions, the app will allow you to continue with the portability request.

Step 3: Complete Verification

Review the FASTag and vehicle details displayed by the app. After confirming the information, proceed with the verification process.

The system may ask you to request and enter an OTP sent to your registered mobile number. Users should keep their FASTag-linked mobile number active because OTP verification is required during the process.

Step 4: Select The New Bank

Once verification is complete, the app will show the available participating banks. Select the bank you want to move to and submit the request.

The existing bank will then complete the required closure, refund and settlement process before the FASTag is activated with the new issuer.

FASTag OneTag: Do You Need To Remove The FASTag Sticker?

No. This is the biggest change introduced by OneTag.

Users do not have to peel off the existing FASTag sticker just because they want to change the bank linked to it. The existing physical FASTag can remain on the vehicle, while the issuing bank changes digitally.

The government says the portability system will retain the existing Tag ID and vehicle registration number, making the switch more convenient for motorists.

FASTag OneTag: Keep Your Registered Mobile Number Active

Motorists should ensure that the mobile number registered with their FASTag remains active before starting the portability request. OTP-based verification can be required during the process, so users may not be able to complete the transfer without access to the registered number.

Users should also carefully check their existing FASTag account before requesting portability. Any pending dues, account-related restrictions or eligibility issues could affect the request.

FASTag OneTag: What Happens To Your Old FASTag Balance?

Changing the issuing bank does not necessarily mean that the balance or security deposit from the old account will instantly appear with the new bank.

The previous issuer needs to complete the applicable settlement and refund process. Therefore, users may have to wait for the old account to be settled before the portability process is fully completed.

If the refund or settlement takes longer than expected, users should contact their existing FASTag issuer for assistance.

FASTag OneTag: When Can OneTag Portability Be Unavailable?

OneTag is not meant to replace the process for every type of FASTag problem. The portability facility is subject to eligibility checks, and users whose tags do not meet the required conditions may have to obtain a new FASTag instead.

A blocked, blacklisted or otherwise ineligible FASTag may not qualify for portability. In such cases, motorists should follow the instructions provided by the concerned issuer or the RajmargYatra app.

FASTag OneTag: What Changes After FASTag Portability?

The biggest advantage is that motorists can change their FASTag issuing bank without changing the physical tag. The vehicle owner can therefore avoid removing the sticker, buying another physical tag and going through the complete onboarding process again.

OneTag is part of the government’s wider push towards more technology-driven highway tolling. Gadkari has also outlined plans for barrier-free toll collection using technologies such as FASTag and vehicle number-plate recognition, with the government targeting wider implementation by 2027.

OneTag FASTag: What Users Should Remember

  • OneTag allows eligible users to switch the FASTag issuing bank.
  • The existing physical FASTag sticker can remain on the vehicle.
  • The facility is available through the RajmargYatra app.
  • Users need access to the mobile number registered with their FASTag.
  • The system carries out eligibility and verification checks.
  • The old issuer must complete the applicable settlement and refund process.
  • After successful portability, the Tag ID and vehicle registration number remain unchanged.

For FASTag users, the change removes one of the most inconvenient parts of switching banks: replacing a sticker that is already fixed to the vehicle. With OneTag, the bank can change while the tag stays where it is.
