Government Offices Holiday in Maharashtra on 29 January 2026: Maharashtra is in a state of mourning because Deputy Chief Minister Ajit Pawar died in a plane crash that occurred on January 28 2026. The state government decided to suspend all operations on January 29 & 30 because of the tragic event that took place.

The government announced three days of public mourning from January 28 to January 30, which included flying flags at half-mast and stopping all official functions.

Ajit Pawar’s Untimely Demise

Ajit Pawar, 66, NCP leader and Maharashtra’s long-serving Deputy CM, lost his life together with four other individuals, who included pilots and security personnel, during a chartered airplane crash which occurred near Baramati airport while they were attempting an emergency landing. The DGCA investigation into the runway fire incident, which spread through the area, will determine the cause of the accident. Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis stated that Pawar, who worked on irrigation projects and succeeded through political challenges, left behind an “irreparable” absence.

Official Mourning Directives

All state government offices remain shuttered on January 29 as part of the mourning, which extends beyond the holiday that was declared on January 28. All educational institutions, including government schools and colleges as well as private schools and colleges throughout the state, closed until January 30. BMC and Mumbai University rescheduled their exams, while banks will follow the local advisories that district collectors will issue.

Last Rites and State Response

Pawar’s state funeral with full honors will take place on January 29 at Baramati after the family gives their approval. CM Fadnavis and Deputy CM Eknath Shinde visited the site; leaders across parties paid tributes. Private offices have different operating hours, but people should stay informed about developments during this period of public distress.

The tragedy creates a major disruption for people in Mumbai, Pune, Nagpur, and other areas who must deal with their sorrow while trying to restore normal operations. The state government has suspended regular activities to pay tribute to Pawar, who left behi, nd a lasting political legacy in Maharashtra.
