Schools will remain closed in Kangra district on Sunday, July 20 and Monday, July 21, following an order issued by District Magistrate and Deputy Commissioner Hemraj Bairwa. The closure applies to all government and private educational institutions, including schools, colleges, technical and vocational institutes, Central University, Sanskrit University, NIFT, Anganwadi centres and childcare centres.

The administration said the decision was taken as a precaution to ensure the safety of students, teachers and staff amid the forecast of extremely heavy rainfall.

The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a red alert for Kangra and several other parts of Himachal Pradesh, warning of extremely heavy rainfall over the next two days.

Authorities have cautioned that the weather system could trigger flash floods, landslides, mudslides and waterlogging in vulnerable areas. The administration has urged residents to stay updated through official weather advisories and avoid unnecessary travel during periods of heavy rain.

Kangra is among the districts placed on high alert due to the severe weather forecast. Heavy rainfall has already been recorded in several parts of Himachal Pradesh.

According to the Meteorological Centre in Shimla, Jot in Chamba district received 109 mm of rainfall, while Kangra recorded 77.4 mm and Palampur received 38 mm during the past 24 hours. Thunderstorms accompanied by lightning were also reported in Kangra and Jot, highlighting the active monsoon conditions across the region.

Officials said the continuing rainfall has increased the possibility of landslides, slope failures and road blockages in hilly areas.

The district administration has confirmed that all examinations scheduled on July 20 and 21 have also been postponed. Teachers and non-teaching staff will remain on leave during the closure period. Deputy Commissioner Hemraj Bairwa appealed to residents to remain cautious and avoid rivers, streams and landslide-prone areas during the spell of bad weather.

He said, “People should avoid going near rivers, streams, and landslide-prone areas unless absolutely necessary.”

The administration also asked people to report emergencies immediately to the District Disaster Management Centre through the toll-free helpline 1077.
