Himanta Biswa Sarma Oath Taking Ceremony: Assam is set to witness a major political event today as Himanta Biswa Sarma takes oath for a second consecutive term as the Chief Minister of the state. The grand ceremony in Guwahati comes after the BJP-led National Democratic Alliance (NDA) secured a massive victory in the Assam Assembly elections, strengthening its hold in the Northeast once again.

Several top political leaders, including Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Union Home Minister Amit Shah, Defence Minister Rajnath Singh and senior NDA leaders, are attending the swearing-in ceremony in Guwahati. Tight security arrangements and traffic diversions have been implemented across the city ahead of the high-profile political event.

Himanta Biswa Sarma Oath Taking Ceremony

The oath-taking ceremony is taking place at the Veterinary College Field in the Khanapara area of Guwahati at 11:40 am. Governor Lakshman Prasad Acharya will administer the oath of office and secrecy to Himanta Biswa Sarma and other ministers joining the new cabinet.

The event is expected to witness the presence of several Union ministers, chief ministers and deputy chief ministers from NDA-ruled states.

Himanta Biswa Sarma will take oath as the CM of Assam for a second consecutive term on May 12, 2026. The grand swearing-in ceremony is being held at the Veterinary College Field in the Khanapara area of Guwahati.

Assam Chief Minister Sworn In Today

Himanta Biswa Sarma is becoming the Chief Minister of Assam for the second consecutive term after leading the NDA to a sweeping electoral victory. Sarma has emerged as one of the BJP’s strongest faces in the Northeast and played a major role in expanding the party’s influence across the region.

Ahead of the ceremony, Sarma visited the famous Kamakhya Temple and sought blessings for “peace, progress and prosperity”.

Third NDA Government in Assam

This will be the third straight NDA government in Assam. The alliance comprising the Bharatiya Janata Party, Asom Gana Parishad and Bodoland People’s Front registered a landslide win in the Assembly elections.

The NDA won 102 seats in the 126-member Assembly. The BJP alone secured 82 seats, marking the first time the party achieved a single-party majority in Assam. AGP and BPF won 10 seats each.

With this victory, Himanta Biswa Sarma becomes the only non-Congress leader to lead Assam for consecutive NDA terms.

Himanta Biswa Sarma Oath Taking Ceremony: Which Ministers Will Be Taking Oath Today?

Four legislators will take the oath alongside Himanta Biswa Sarma during the ceremony. The ministers include:

  • Rameswar Teli (BJP)
  • Ajanta Neog (BJP)
  • Atul Bora (AGP)
  • Charan Boro (BPF)

Ajanta Neog, Atul Bora and Charan Boro were also part of the previous cabinet. Rameswar Teli, a former Union minister, is making a return to Assam state politics.

Himanta Biswa Sarma Cabinet

The new Himanta Biswa Sarma-led cabinet is expected to focus on governance, infrastructure development, welfare schemes and strengthening the BJP-led NDA alliance in Assam. Along with Sarma, four ministers from the BJP and its alliance partners are taking oath in the first phase of cabinet formation.

The ministers taking the oath include:

  • Rameswar Teli (BJP)
  • Ajanta Neog (BJP)
  • Atul Bora (AGP)
  • Charan Boro (BPF)

Ajanta Neog, Atul Bora and Charan Boro were also members of the previous Assam cabinet. Neog earlier handled the finance department, Bora managed agriculture, while Boro held the transport portfolio.

Former Union minister Rameswar Teli has now returned to Assam politics and is expected to play an important role in the new government.

Massive Security & VIP Presence in Guwahati

Authorities have deployed multi-layered security arrangements across Guwahati due to the presence of top political leaders and foreign diplomats. Barricades and traffic diversions have been put in place around the Khanapara area.

US Ambassador to India Sergio Gor has also arrived in Guwahati to attend the swearing-in ceremony. More than 40 NDA chief ministers and deputy chief ministers are expected to attend the event along with several senior BJP leaders.

Himanta Biswa Sarma Oath-Taking Ceremony: What to Expect Next?

Following the oath-taking ceremony, the new Assam government is expected to hold its first cabinet meeting immediately. Himanta Biswa Sarma has stated that implementing the BJP’s election promises and accelerating development projects will remain the top priorities of the government.

Political analysts believe the NDA’s strong performance in Assam could further strengthen the BJP’s position in the Northeast ahead of future national elections.
