India News: West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee renewed her legal challenge over voter deletions on Wednesday as she formally filed her nomination from the Bhabanipur Assembly constituency. The Trinamool Congress (TMC) chief said her party would again approach the Supreme Court over the freezing of the electoral roll, arguing that millions of voters risk losing their voting rights just days before polling.
Her remarks came amid mounting political tension ahead of the West Bengal Assembly elections, where voter list revisions and deletions have become one of the central campaign issues. Reports indicate that millions of names were removed from the electoral rolls after the Special Intensive Revision (SIR), triggering legal disputes and political reactions across the state.

After filing her nomination, Mamata Banerjee expressed concern over the deletion of large numbers of voters and questioned the decision to freeze the electoral roll ahead of polling.
“I am saddened. Several voters have been deleted. Around 3.2 million of the six million doubtful cases under adjudication were included in the voter list because I moved the Supreme Court,” Banerjee said.
She further added that the remaining voters should also be allowed to vote before the election schedule concludes.
According to official data, lakhs of voters across West Bengal were placed under adjudication or removed during the Special Intensive Revision process. The Election Commission stated that nearly 27 lakh voters whose claims were rejected may not be able to vote in the upcoming elections due to the roll freeze.
Banerjee argued that allowing these voters to regain their names after the elections would defeat the purpose of democracy. She said the party would again seek judicial relief to restore voting rights for those excluded.

The Bhabanipur seat has become one of the most closely watched constituencies in the state. Mamata Banerjee is contesting from this seat as the Trinamool Congress seeks to retain power for another term.
She also highlighted earlier legal developments related to voter deletions and pointed to the Supreme Court’s role in restoring several names.
“They would not be able to vote,” she said, referring to voters who may be added after polling dates.
The issue of voter list revisions has become politically sensitive across districts, especially as millions of names were reportedly removed during the SIR exercise, reducing the total voter base in the state.

Bhabanipur Assembly constituency is the seat from which Mamata Banerjee has filed her nomination for the 2026 Assembly elections. The constituency is considered a stronghold of the Trinamool Congress and has played a crucial role in her political career.

Following the defeat, she later entered the assembly by winning a by-election from Bhabanipur, reaffirming the constituency’s importance in her political journey.

Banerjee also referred to earlier Supreme Court observations that allowed affected voters to approach appellate tribunals. “Why was the electoral roll frozen? I do not understand this. We will again move the court to seek justice,” she said.
She had earlier challenged the Special Intensive Revision in court, alleging that the Election Commission unfairly targeted voters in the state and removed names without proper verification.
