India Weather Alert (September 3): It looks like the days of monsoon are far from over as weather agency IMD has put out heavy rain alerts in 19 Indian states. According to the forecaster, thunderstorms as well as 65 kilometre winds  are on the cards.

In its forecast for tomorrow (September 3), the Indian Meteorological Department (IMD)  warned of immense rain in large parts of the country. 

It issued heavy rain alerts in 19 Indian states. Residents can expect the rain to be accompanied by thunderstorms and strong winds reaching up to 65 kmh. The hilly states in North India are prone to landslides, while eastern states like Odisha are at risk of thunderstorms and lightning.

Yes, landslides are possible, but they will be a localized risk rather than a nationwide threat.  There is a moderate to high risk of landslides in the Himalayan states of North India like Uttarakhand, Himachal Pradesh and Jammu and Kashmir. The hilly parts of Northeast India and West Bengal may also face landslides due to their terrain.

The following 19 states are currently under IMD’s heavy rain alerts: 

•  Uttar Pradesh (Ghaziabad, Meerut, Muzaffarnagar, Moradabad, Gautam Buddh Nagar, Agra, Aligarh, Raebareli, Hardoi, Amroha, Hathras, Unnao, Etawah, Hamirpur, Amethi, Sultanpur, Azamgarh, Ayodhya, Gorakhpur and Deoria)

• Bihar (West Champaran, East Champaran, Gaya, Jehanabad, Patna, Bhojpur, Gopalganj, Rohtas, Buxar, Vaishali, Samastipur, Darbhanga, Madhubani, Saharsa, Supaul, Purnia, Kishanganj, Araria, Katihar, Bhagalpur, Munger, Khagaria, Lakhisarai and Begusarai)

• Delhi (Deoghar, Jamshedpur, Bokaro, Ranchi, Ramgarh, Khunti, Chatra, Palamu, Dumka, Simdega, Hazaribagh, Dhanbad, Giridih, Gumla, West Singhbhum and Latehar)

When Will the Monsoon End? 

Many are keen to know how long the monsoon spell will last.September is generally the final month of the Southwest Monsoon season, in India.  So, by mid September, the intensity of rain should weaken and by the end of this month, it will likely be close to an end.The rain withdrawal normally starts from northwestern India and progresses south/east.

Amid the stormy conditions, people in affected Indian states should: 

• Maintain a strictly safe distance from all water bodies, due to high water levels. 

• Check localized police traffic advisories before taking critical mountain corridors due to widespread rockfalls and slippery surfaces 

• Keep an emergency bag ready with a torch, power banks, dry food, and medicines in case there are any power cuts.

• Relocate to higher floors or higher ground immediately if water starts rising in your area. 

• Pack your essentials & evacuate immediately if the local village pradhan or district administration advises it.
