New Delhi, Jan 8: Congress on Thursday targeted the Narendra Modi government over the foreign policy with United States saying over President Donald Trump pushing a Bill that will impose vast new sanctions on India for its trade and other ties with Russia saying bilateral relations are going through "very turbulent times" and there is undoubtedly a ‘new abnormal’ in the relationship.

Congress general secretary and communications incharge Jairam Ramesh in a post on X, said, "Indo-US relations are going through very turbulent times in spite of the PM being among the first to land up in the White House during Trump 2.0."

Ramesh said that senator Lindsay Graham, a close ally of President Trump, is pushing a Bill that will impose vast new sanctions on India for its trade and other ties with Russia.

"Earlier Senator Bernie Moreno had introduced a Bill that proposes a 25 per cent tax on American companies that make “outsourcing payments”," he said.

Ramesh, who is also a Rajya Sabha member said that to add to India’s extreme discomfiture, "President Trump continues to shower lavish praise on Field Marshal Asim Munir".

"There is undoubtedly a ‘new abnormal’ in the bilateral relationship. Every day is a fresh challenge, appeasing posts from the PM notwithstanding," the Congress leader added.

The sharp reaction from the Congress leader came after Trump has backed a sanctions bill that could impose 500 per cent tariffs on nations buying Russian oil, giving the White House leverage against countries like China and India to stop them from purchasing cheap oil from Moscow.
