The earthquake struck at around 5:58 a.m. local time on Saturday near Flores Island. The US Geological Survey placed the epicentre about 68 km north-northwest of Ende, at a depth of roughly 10 km. Its shallow depth contributed to the severe damage across parts of East Nusa Tenggara.
The death toll subsequently rose to 51, while more than 100 people were reported injured. Around 5,000 residents were displaced or evacuated as authorities moved people away from damaged buildings and areas threatened by further landslides and aftershocks.
