New Delhi: The Indian Railway Catering and Tourism Corporation (IRCTC) launched a major upgrade to its ticket-booking website on July 15 (Wednesday). The main motive of updating the website is to make train reservations faster, smoother, and more user-friendly. The Union Railway Minister, Ashwini Vaishnaw, announced the revamp after students raised concerns about the existing portal during an event at MNIT Jaipur. Among the key issues highlighted was the inconvenience caused by repeated CAPTCHA verification, especially during Tatkal bookings. The upgraded platform is designed to address these challenges with improved performance, a cleaner interface, and several passenger-centric features.

How will the new IRCTC website make Tatkal booking faster?

One of the biggest highlights of the revamped website is its significantly enhanced booking capacity. The previous system could process around 32,000 ticket bookings per minute, whereas the upgraded platform can now handle more than 1.5 lakh bookings per minute. Additionally, the Passenger Reservation System (PRS) has been upgraded to process over 40 lakh enquiries per minute, compared to the earlier capacity of around 4 lakh enquiries. This is expected to reduce website slowdowns and improve the overall booking experience, particularly during peak Tatkal booking hours when demand is at its highest.

What new features have been introduced for passengers?

The upgraded IRCTC website comes with several new features aimed at making ticket booking more convenient:

Fare Calendar: Users can compare ticket fares across different travel dates before making a booking.
Preferred Seat Selection: Passengers can submit their preferred berth or seat choices during reservation.
Multi-language Support: The portal now supports multiple Indian languages to improve accessibility.
Integrated Services: Facilities for Divyangjan, students, and patients have been brought together on a single platform.
Unified Seat Availability: Instead of checking Sleeper, AC 3 Tier, AC 2 Tier and other classes separately, users can now view seat availability across all classes in one place.

(Note: These additions are expected to simplify the reservation process and save passengers valuable time.)

What changes have been made to the website interface?

Apart from backend improvements, IRCTC has also redesigned the user interface to make navigation simpler. The new website reduces unnecessary CAPTCHA verifications, removes distracting pop-ups and flashing graphics, and offers a cleaner layout. These improvements are particularly beneficial for Tatkal bookings, where every second counts. With fewer interruptions and a more responsive interface, passengers are expected to experience quicker and more seamless ticket reservations.

The upgrade by the department marks one of the biggest digital moves to India’s online ticketing system in recent years. With faster booking capacity and a simplified interface, reduced CAPTCHA interruptions, a fare calendar, and several passenger-friendly features, the new platform aims to make train ticket booking more efficient and hassle-free. Frequent railway passengers, especially those relying on Tatkal tickets, are likely to benefit the most from these improvements.
