A police constable was killed after suspected terrorists opened fire on a police team in Anantnag, Jammu and Kashmir, on Wednesday afternoon, officials said. The attack took place around 12:30 pm near Lal Chowk in Anantnag. The injured head constable was rushed to the Government Medical College (GMC) Hospital but later succumbed to his injuries. Following the attack, security forces sealed off the area and launched a search operation to trace the attackers. The deceased has been identified as Head Constable Aashiq Hussain, a resident of Beerwah in Budgam district.

Attack Comes Amid Amarnath Yatra Security
The incident comes at a time when security has already been tightened across Jammu and Kashmir for the ongoing Amarnath Yatra. Thousands of pilgrims are travelling to the shrine, and security agencies have increased surveillance and preventive measures to ensure their safety.
In recent weeks, security forces have intensified checks along the pilgrimage route. Earlier this month, Anantnag Police detained an alleged terror overground worker (OGW) after a facial recognition system (FRS) at the Nunwan base camp identified the suspect during routine security screening. Officials said the incident highlighted the role of technology in strengthening security arrangements for the annual pilgrimage.
Last week, the Government Railway Police (GRP) also detained eight people during a verification drive at Jammu railway station as part of enhanced security measures for the yatra. Earlier, preventive action had also been taken against 14 others under the Bharatiya Nagarik Suraksha Sanhita (BNSS).
