A luxury car crash in Kanpur’s upscale Gwaltoli area has turned into a high-profile controversy after a Lamborghini allegedly driven by a tobacco businessman’s son injured several pedestrians and damaged multiple vehicles. The incident has sparked public anger, raised questions about police procedures, and triggered a debate on influence and accountability on Indian roads. Authorities continue to investigate the accident while videos and eyewitness accounts keep the case in the national spotlight.

Police said the crash happened on Sunday afternoon near a busy VIP stretch when the high-performance sports car lost control and ploughed into pedestrians and two-wheelers, leaving at least six people injured.

The vehicle has since been seized and sent for inspection, while investigators examine the sequence of events and responsibility for the accident.

However, Mishra’s lawyer, Mrityunjay Kumar, has claimed that Shivam was not driving the car. “His driver, Mohan, was driving. This is only an accident case. Since Shivam was not behind the wheel, no case should be made against him,” the lawyer said.

Police Commissioner Raghubir Lal has stated that investigators believe Shivam Mishra was driving at the time. “Shivam Mishra drove the car. His father is KK Mishra. After the accident, Shivam Mishra's bouncers pulled him out of the car. It is being said that he has some medical issues. The FIR of the accident was registered earlier, and now, in our investigation, we have learned that the name of the driver is Shivam Mishra..."

The handling of the case has drawn criticism from locals and victims who alleged that authorities initially filed an FIR against “unknown persons.” They claim police added Shivam Mishra’s name several hours later, after videos and eyewitness statements emerged.

Following the viral footage and public outrage, the Officer-in-Charge of Gwaltoli police station was removed from his post and attached to the police line. Senior officials said there was prima facie negligence in following the procedure immediately after the crash.

Several injured persons described scenes of panic as the speeding luxury car rammed into vehicles and pedestrians. Sonu Tripathi, one of the victims, said he and his cousin were standing near their motorcycle when the car hit them. “My cousin fell to the ground, and two others were thrown onto the footpath,” he told the reporters.

Witnesses also alleged that private bouncers accompanying the car occupants tried to push back crowds after the crash, which angered locals and escalated tensions at the scene. Eyewitness accounts said the vehicle first struck an auto-rickshaw and then hit a motorcycle before coming to a halt.

The crash has brought renewed attention to Shivam Mishra’s father, KK Mishra, a tobacco businessman who owns Banshidhar Exports Pvt Ltd. Authorities had earlier conducted Income Tax raids at his properties, seizing large amounts of cash, jewellery, and multiple luxury vehicles, including high-end sports cars.

Investigators also found that the Lamborghini involved in the accident is registered in Shivam Mishra’s name and forms part of a luxury fleet linked to the family’s business empire.
