A massive explosion at a fireworks manufacturing unit in Kerala’s Thrissur district has killed at least 8 people and injured several others, triggering panic across the region. The blast took place at a facility near Mundathikode that was preparing fireworks for the upcoming Thrissur Pooram festival.

The impact was so powerful that residents reported hearing it several kilometres away, with many initially mistaking it for an earthquake. Thick smoke, scattered explosives and secondary blasts made rescue operations extremely challenging. Emergency teams continue to search the site as authorities assess the full scale of damage.

Kerala Blast: How the Fireworks Factory Blasts Happen in Thrissur?

A massive explosion has occurred in a fireworks factory in Thrissur district. As reported by ANI, 8 deaths have been confirmed so far, with several others sustaining injuries. These kinds of explosions often occur due to unsafe handling of explosive materials, overcrowded storage areas, or lapses in safety protocols. In many units, firecracker preparation happens manually in small confined spaces, which increases the risk of accidental ignition.

Experts point out that even minor friction, heat, or static discharge can trigger chain reactions when large quantities of explosive materials are stored together. The presence of multiple workers handling different stages of firecracker preparation further increases danger. Authorities are now investigating whether similar lapses caused the latest blast.

Kerala Blast Casualties & Injuries Reported

Officials have confirmed the death of 8 people in the explosion, while several others sustained injuries. Nearly 40 workers are believed to have been inside the unit at the time of the blast, though the exact number has not been confirmed.

Many injured victims have been shifted to the Government Medical College Hospital in Thrissur and nearby medical facilities. Several of them are in critical condition with severe burn injuries. Rescue teams are continuing search operations amid fears that more victims could still be trapped in the debris.

What is the Pooram Festival?

The Thrissur Pooram is one of Kerala’s most famous temple festivals, known for its grand scale and cultural significance. It is held annually at the Vadakkunnathan Temple in Thrissur and attracts thousands of visitors from across the country.

The festival features decorated elephants, traditional percussion performances, and elaborate fireworks displays that form its main attraction. Different temple groups, including the Thiruvambady faction, prepare fireworks weeks in advance as part of the celebrations. The blast occurred during preparations for these fireworks.

Kerala Blast: Eyewitness Accounts & Local Panic

Eyewitnesses described the explosion as extremely powerful, with many saying the sound resembled an earthquake. Residents reported that windows, doors, and even vehicles shook violently due to the impact.

One eyewitness said, “I had come to a nearby farmland. I arrived in a vehicle. Right after the explosion, the vehicle shook violently. I was about to get out when it happened. The vehicle was really shaking. You can imagine how terrifying it is when even a Fortuner shakes like that,” Malayala Manorama quoted an eyewitness as saying.

Panic spread quickly in nearby areas as flames and smoke rose from the site, and residents rushed outdoors fearing further explosions.

Kerala Blast: Government Action & Official Response

Kerala Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan ordered the immediate mobilisation of all emergency services after the incident. He directed health authorities to ensure advanced medical care for the injured, including specialist support if required.

The Chief Minister also reviewed the situation with senior officials and confirmed coordinated response efforts involving the police, fire and rescue services, health department, revenue, and disaster management teams. He expressed condolences for the lives lost and assured full government assistance for rescue and treatment operations.

Kerala Blast: Link to Virudhunagar Firecracker Tragedy

The Thrissur explosion comes shortly after a major firecracker factory blast in Virudhunagar, Tamil Nadu, which killed around 25 people and injured several others. That incident occurred at the “Vanaja” fireworks factory and is considered one of the deadliest industrial accidents in the region in recent years.

The back-to-back tragedies have raised serious concerns over safety standards in fireworks manufacturing units across South India. Authorities are now under pressure to strengthen inspections and enforce stricter compliance, especially during festival seasons.

Kerala Blast: Ongoing Investigation

Authorities have launched a detailed investigation into the cause of the explosion. Preliminary suspicion points to possible mishandling of explosive materials or a technical failure, but nothing has been confirmed yet.

Forensic teams are currently examining the site to determine how the chain reaction started. Officials are also verifying whether the unit complied with safety norms under the Petroleum and Explosives Safety Organisation (PESO). Further details are expected once rescue operations are completed and evidence collection progresses.
