Kerala Weather Today, June 4: The southwest monsoon has arrived in Kerala to officially kick off India’s important four-month rainfall season. The India Meteorological Department (IMD) officially confirmed the onset of monsoon Thursday June 4 after heavy rainfall that hammered several parts of the state overnight. Heavy rainfall has already triggered alerts in several districts, raising fears of the possibility of flash floods and waterlogging in certain areas.

IMD issued orange alert

As heavy rain continued across the state,  IMD issued an orange alert for Alappuzha, Kottayam and Ernakulam districts for three hours on Thursday. An orange alert shows the likelihood of very heavy rainfall and advises residents and authorities to remain prepared for possible disruptions.

Weather department said the southwest monsoon has advanced into Kerala and Mahe, the whole region of Lakshadweep, some parts of Karnataka and Tamil Nadu, and some parts of the Arabian Sea and the Bay of Bengal.

Was there a delay in Southwest Monsoon this year?

Yes, the monsoon arrived in Kerala on June 4, which was a day after the usual arrival of June 1 and also fell behind the forecast made by the India Meteorological Department four days earlier.

However, IMD Director General Dr. Mrutyunjay Mohapatra said that the delay isn’t that extraordinary. He said the standard onset date is calculated based on a normal distribution (with a standard deviation of seven days). A three‑day delay is no big deal in that case.

Flash Flood threat In Kerala

According to the weather forecast, the rain is likely to stay heavy over the first week of the monsoon, with some parts receiving more than 70 mm of rain in a day.

The saturated soil, waters overflowing their banks and the rainfall that is likely to come out in a downpour is likely to bring with it pockets of flooding, especially in the low-lying and hilly areas. The situation is being kept under careful watch as monsoon activity intensifies over the state.

The met office says that Kerala will continue with the wet weather over the next week with showers and thunderstorms in most parts, with overcast skies dominating. The heavy downpour is likely to continue until June 10, with the central parts receiving more rainfall.

Very likely the temperature will remain at about 30°C. But with high humidity and the associated thunderstorm, commutes could be difficult for many.

What Is the IMD’s Outlook for the 2026 Monsoon Season?

The IMD has revised its seasonal rainfall outlook and expects India to receive around 90 per cent of the Long Period Average (LPA) rainfall this year. The long-period average seasonal rainfall for the country is 87 cm.

Meteorologists have linked the possibility of below-normal rainfall to the gradual development of El Niño conditions in the Pacific Ocean. The IMD said current neutral conditions are expected to transition towards El Niño, which could strengthen by September and potentially affect rainfall patterns during the latter part of the monsoon season.
