Schools and colleges across 11 districts in Kerala will remain closed on Monday, August 3, as heavy rain continues to batter the state. District administrations announced the holiday as a precaution after the India Meteorological Department (IMD) forecast more rainfall and issued a yellow alert for several districts.
The decision was taken to ensure the safety of students amid persistent rainfall, waterlogging, flooding and strong winds affecting several parts of the state.
Which Kerala Districts Have Declared A School Holiday?
A full holiday has been announced in: Palakkad, Pathanamthitta, Kannur, Kozhikode, Kasaragod, Wayanad, Malappuram, Thrissur, Kottayam and Idukki. In Alappuzha, only educational institutions functioning as relief camps in Chengannur and Kuttanad taluks, along with anganwadis and tuition centres, will remain closed.
Depending on the district, the holiday applies to schools, colleges, professional colleges, anganwadis, madrasas, tuition centres and coaching institutes. Several districts have also included CBSE, ICSE and Kendriya Vidyalaya schools in the closure order. Most district administrations have clarified that university examinations, public examinations, PSC exams and scheduled interviews will be conducted as planned, despite the closure of educational institutions.
What Is The Weather Forecast?
The IMD has issued a yellow alert for Pathanamthitta, Alappuzha, Kottayam, Idukki, Ernakulam, Malappuram, Kozhikode, Wayanad, Kannur and Kasaragod. The weather department has also warned of winds reaching 40-50 kmph along with continued rainfall.
What Advisory Has Been Issued?
Authorities have advised residents to avoid unnecessary travel and stay away from rivers, streams, waterlogged roads and landslide-prone areas. Students have been asked to remain indoors and follow updates issued by district administrations and the IMD.
