Maharashtra Election Result 2026:  As the trends from the begining of counting is showing that the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) has emerged as the single largest party. According to preliminary trends at 2:40 pm, the BJP is leading in 1,087 wards, while its ally, Shiv Sena, is ahead in 291 wards across 29 civic bodies.

The spotlight is on Mumbai, where the Thackeray brothers have joined forces to challenge the BJP-Shiv Sena alliance and reclaim their political influence. Early leads show the BJP-led alliance ahead in 118 BMC wards, while the Thackeray brothers’ faction leads in 78 wards, signaling a competitive battle in the city.

Maharashtra Election Result 2026:  Shiv Sena (UBT)-MNS-NCP(SP) Alliance Struggles

The opposition alliance comprising Shiv Sena (UBT), Maharashtra Navnirman Sena (MNS), and NCP(SP) appears to have stalled, leading in only 68 wards. Within this alliance, the UBT holds 59 seats, MNS leads in 9, while NCP(SP) has yet to secure a single lead.

The NCP, led by Deputy CM Ajit Pawar, has struggled to make an impact, currently showing zero leads across all 227 wards in Mumbai. Meanwhile, the Congress has managed to lead in 14 seats, though its ally in the local polls, the Vanchit Bahujan Aaghadi (VBA), has not opened its account yet.

The BJP-Shiv Sena alliance, collectively leading in 128 wards, continues to hold a strong position, with Shiv Sena ahead in 30 seats.

The BJP’s dominance is not limited to Mumbai. Early trends from other municipal corporations across Maharashtra including Nagpur, Pune, Thane, Nashik, and Shambhajinagar show the party performing strongly.

  • Nagpur: Out of 151 seats, BJP leads in 113, while Congress trails with 30.

  • Pune: BJP leads in 90 seats, while the NCP-NCP alliance trails with 20. The Congress-UBT alliance secured just 10 seats collectively.

  • Thane: BJP is the single largest party, leading in 29 of 131 wards, whereas the NCP won only 4 seats. The UBT-MNS-NCP(SP) alliance combined managed 5 leads.

Mumbai’s Civic Exercise After Eight Years

The 2026 BMC elections mark the first civic polls in Mumbai after an eight-year gap. The previous elections were held in 2017, and the term of the last elected mayor, Kishori Pednekar, ended in March 2022. With the conclusion of the polls, Mumbai is set to have a new mayor after nearly four years.
