Delhi witnessed a massive fire tragedy today. Amid intense heatwave conditions, a devastating fire at a restaurant in South Delhi’s Malviya Nagar claimed at least 21 lives and left several others injured on Wednesday morning. A huge blaze erupted at the multi-storey Lemon Green Restaurant in Hauz Rani area of Malviya Nagar. Based on the reports, the fire erupted at around 8:50 am while the Delhi Fire Service (DFS) received an emergency call at around 9:45 am. As of now, 40 people have been rescued, according to police.
The thick smoke filled the building. Fire and rescue teams based at Nehru Place fire station responded to the emergency.
Officials said that several people lost their lives in the tragedy and many others were injured and shifted to hospitals for treatment. DFS personnel rescued 3 people from the basement of the restaurant and shifted them to the nearest hospital by CATS ambulance.
Officials said the exact condition of the injured would get clear only after detailed medical examinations. The tragic incident comes just a day after a suspected LPG cylinder explosion injured 10 people in Delhi’s Mukundpur area, raising fresh concerns about safety standards and emergency preparedness in the capital.

Authorities have said that no definitive conclusion can be drawn until forensic and fire safety inspections are completed. Fire officials and police personnel continue to examine the site to determine how the blaze started and spread so rapidly.
“Based on inquiries made with people at the site, we have gathered that this building does not function as a standalone residential complex. Rather, it appears that most of the occupants were individuals whose known people were being treated in the MAX Hospital located directly across the street. Therefore, it is likely that these individuals were staying here for that specific purpose.” said Delhi Fire Services (DFS).
How Was the Fire Brought Under Control?
A senior fire official said 10 fire tenders were deployed to tackle the blaze. After several hours of firefighting efforts, the fire was brought under control. Rescue teams continued searching the premises to ensure that no one remained trapped inside.
