On Sunday, February 22, 2026, Mexico has confirmed that it has killed Nemesio Oseguera, commonly known as El Mencho, the leader of the Jalisco New Generation Cartel. He was one of the most wanted criminals in Mexico and the United States, and his death has triggered extensive security operations in various states.

Indian Embassy Issued Advisory: Areas of Concern for Indian Citizens

Because of the ongoing military activities and roadblocks, the Indian Embassy has advised its citizens to remain in secure areas in the following regions:

  • Jalisco State: Puerto Vallarta, Chapala, Guadalajara
  • Tamaulipas State: Reynosa and surrounding cities
  • Michoacan State
  • Guerrero State
  • Nuevo Leon State

El Mencho Killed: Safety Instructions for Indian Nationals in Maxico

The Embassy advised Indians to:

  • Stay away from areas where there are active law enforcement operations
  • Be alert and aware of your surroundings
  • Stay away from crowded areas
  • Stay indoors and cut down on unnecessary travel

In a post on X, the Embassy advised, "Follow the instructions of local authorities and in the event of an emergency, dial 911. Let family and friends know your whereabouts and status through phone calls, text messages, and social media."

The Embassy of India in Mexico has provided a dedicated helpline for Indian nationals: +52 55 4847 7539. Citizens are encouraged to use it for any urgent assistance or guidance during this period.
