Two people were killed and four to five others are feared trapped after a landslide at Gausiya Chawl in Ghatkopar’s Chirag Nagar area of Mumbai early Wednesday. Rescue and relief operations are underway, with teams from the Mumbai Fire Brigade, Mumbai Police and the National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) searching the debris. The incident occurred around 3:48 am after a portion of a hillside collapsed, sending debris onto two to three houses.
What Happened In The Ghatkopar landslide?
According to the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) Mumbai Fire Brigade, the landslide occurred at Gausiya Chawl, where the collapse trapped several people beneath the debris. Officials initially estimated that five to six people could be trapped. Police later confirmed that two people had died, while four to five others were still feared trapped.
How Many People Have Been Rescued?
Two injured people have been admitted to hospital following the incident. They were identified as 18-year-old Sohel Ansari, who suffered a head injury, and 14 year old Mohamad Ansari, who sustained a back injury. Both are reported to be in stable condition. The bodies of the two deceased victims have been sent to a hospital for further procedures.
What Is The Rescue Operation Status?
Rescue teams from the Mumbai Fire Brigade, Mumbai Police and NDRF are working at the site to locate and evacuate anyone still trapped under the debris. Mumbai Mayor Ritu Tawde and Additional Municipal Commissioner (Eastern Suburbs) Avinash Dhakne also visited the affected site to assess the situation. Police said further investigation and necessary legal action will be carried out by Ghatkopar Police.
