Heavy rain continues to affect Maharashtra as the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) has declared a holiday for all schools and colleges in Mumbai on Tuesday following an orange alert issued by the India Meteorological Department (IMD). Educational institutions in Thane, Raigad and Navi Mumbai will also remain closed as authorities warn of more heavy rain, waterlogging and transport disruptions. Authorities stated that continuous rainfall over the last three days has increased the risk of waterlogging, falling trees and traffic disruptions, making it unsafe for students to travel. The BMC said the move is meant to keep students safe and has advised people to step out only if necessary.Â
Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis has warned that parts of Nashik and Trimbakeshwar could receive nearly 300 mm of rainfall due to cloudburst-like conditions. He said the district administration has already started preparations and appealed to residents to remain alert as heavy rain is expected.
How Has Heavy Rain Affected The Mumbai-Pune Region?
Heavy rain has been falling in Maharashtra for the last two days and has caused many problems. Some roads between Mumbai and Pune were blocked because of landslides, and many roads were flooded, making traffic very slow. The main roads from Pune to Mumbai were closed for some time because it was not safe to travel. More heavy rain is expected, so Mumbai officials have told all departments to stay ready for emergencies. A Maharashtra minister has asked people to avoid unnecessary travel, especially to tourist places, because strong winds and heavy rain are expected to continue. Red alerts have also been issued in several parts of the state, which means the weather could be very dangerous.
Heavy rainfall has disrupted transport across the Mumbai-Pune region over the past few days. A landslide on the Mumbai-Pune Expressway’s Missing Link affected traffic on Monday. However, the Maharashtra State Road Development Corporation (MSRDC) later confirmed that the debris had been cleared and traffic had resumed.
Rail services between Mumbai and Pune were badly affected due to landslides and heavy rainfall in the ghat section. According to the Central Railway, 41 mail and express trains have been cancelled, while 59 trains have been diverted because of the disruption. Mumbai local train services continue to face delays. On Tuesday morning, local trains on the Western Line were running around 10 to 15 minutes late. Local services on the Central Line were also affected on Monday because of the heavy rainfall.
