Mumbai remains on high alert as relentless monsoon rain continues to batter the city. After schools and colleges were shut on Monday, the Maharashtra State Disaster Management Authority (SDMA) has now advised private offices to allow Work From Home (WFH) wherever possible, while non-essential government offices will function only for half a day. The city continues to face waterlogging, transport disruptions, landslides and rain-related deaths as the IMD’s weather warning remains in place. The announcement was made through SDMA Maharashtra’s official X account.
Heavy rain continued across Mumbai on Sunday, prompting the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) to declare a holiday for all schools and colleges on Monday. The decision came after the India Meteorological Department (IMD) issued an orange alert, warning of heavy to very heavy rainfall and strong winds.

How Has The Rain Affected Transport?
The heavy rain has badly affected road and rail travel. A landslide near Lohagad Fort forced authorities to completely close both the Pune-Mumbai Expressway and the old Mumbai-Pune Highway. Rail services between Mumbai and Pune were also disrupted after another landslide hit the ghat section. Authorities have advised people to avoid non-essential travel until conditions improve.
What Safety Advisory Has The BMC Issued?
The BMC has urged residents to stay indoors unless travelling is absolutely necessary. People have been advised to stay away from trees, weak buildings, hoardings, electric poles and other risky structures. The civic body has also asked citizens not to park vehicles under trees and to avoid beaches, seafronts and waterlogged areas. Residents have also been requested to rely only on official updates and avoid spreading rumours.
The BMC said around 15,000 officers and emergency personnel have been deployed across Mumbai to handle the rain situation. Senior officials are monitoring the situation and coordinating rescue and relief operations. People facing emergencies can contact the BMC Helpline by dialling 1916.
What Is The Latest IMD Weather Warning?
The India Meteorological Department has warned that heavy rain is likely to continue across Mumbai and nearby areas. Strong winds are also expected, with speeds reaching 80-90 kmph in some places. Authorities remain on high alert as Mumbai continues to witness one of the strongest spells of monsoon rain this season.
