Mumbai Weather Today: Mumbai and several parts of the Mumbai Metropolitan Region (MMR) remain under heavy rain alerts on July 23, with the India Meteorological Department (IMD) forecasting more intense showers across the region. While schools and colleges in Mumbai will remain open, authorities have not announced any city-wide holiday and said educational institutions will continue to function unless weather conditions worsen significantly.
However, the Palghar district administration has declared a holiday for all schools, colleges, anganwadis and other educational institutions after the IMD issued a Red Alert for extremely heavy rainfall. The decision was taken as a precautionary measure to ensure the safety of students and staff.
What Weather Alert Has IMD Issued?
The IMD has issued:
•   Red Alert for Palghar due to extremely heavy rainfall.
•   Orange Alert for neighbouring Thane district, where heavy to very heavy rain is expected.
The weather department has predicted gusty winds of 50 to 60 kmph across Mumbai, Thane and Palghar. Some coastal areas may experience even stronger winds during intense rain spells. Apart from Mumbai and Palghar, the IMD has forecast heavy rainfall across Konkan and Goa, while isolated locations in the ghat regions of Maharashtra may receive extremely heavy showers.
What Risks Have Authorities Warned About?
Officials have cautioned residents about:
•   Urban flooding
•   Waterlogging in low-lying areas
•   Flash floods
•   Landslides in hilly regions
•   Traffic disruptions due to heavy rainfall
Authorities have urged residents to stay updated with official weather advisories, avoid unnecessary travel during heavy showers, and stay away from beaches and coastal areas due to rough sea conditions. The IMD said weather conditions could change quickly throughout the day as the active monsoon continues over Mumbai and surrounding districts.
