Mumbai and several neighbouring districts are likely to receive very heavy rainfall over the next few days after the India Meteorological Department (IMD) issued a red alert for Mumbai, Thane, Palghar and Raigad. A red alert has also been issued for Nashik, Pune and the Satara Ghat region. The weather department has warned that the intense monsoon activity is expected to continue till July 7, increasing the risk of flooding, waterlogging, overflowing rivers and travel disruptions. According to IMD, heavy rainfall is expected to continue in Mumbai, Thane and Palghar on Sunday as well. Here is the latest weather update and everything you need to know.

How Much Rainfall Has Mumbai Received In The Last Few Days?

Mumbai has received heavy rainfall over the past three days. At Colaba, rainfall recorded was:

•    July 1: 69.6 mm
•    July 2: 158.2 mm
•    July 3: 111.8 mm

This adds up to 339.6 mm in three days. At Santacruz, rainfall recorded was:

•    July 1: 96.3 mm
•    July 2: 204.6 mm
•    July 3: 101 mm

The station received 401.9 mm of rain over the same period. Heavy rain continued on Friday, with 37 mm recorded at Colaba and 51 mm at Santacruz by 5:30 PM.

According to weather officials, a trough along the Maharashtra-Karnataka coast is continuing to bring moisture into the region. At the same time, a low pressure area over the northwest Bay of Bengal is expected to become stronger over the weekend. Strong winds in the lower atmosphere are also helping increase rainfall over Konkan and nearby ghat areas. These weather systems together are causing continuous heavy rain across Mumbai and surrounding districts.

Which Areas Are Facing flood like conditions?

Heavy rain has pushed rivers in Raigad district above normal levels.

•    The Amba River has crossed the danger mark.
•    The Kundalika River has crossed the warning level.

District authorities have advised people living near riverbanks to stay alert and move to safer places if needed. Several parts of Alibaug have also been flooded, with roads in PNP Nagar, Talkar Nagar and Revas Bypass going underwater. Waterlogging has also been reported at several places along the Mumbai-Goa Highway, making travel difficult.

A team from the Central Government’s THDC Authority visited Ratnagiri to inspect ghat roads managed by the National Highways Authority. Officials inspected, Parshuram Ghat, Kashedi Ghat and Varandha Ghat. The inspections are being carried out to assess road safety during the ongoing heavy rainfall.

The Raigad District Collector has ordered the closure of Ambenali Ghat for all vehicles from July 3 to July 7. The decision was taken because of continuous heavy rain and repeated landslides in the ghat section. Authorities said the closure is necessary to ensure the safety of travellers until weather conditions improve.
