Datia: Former Madhya Pradesh Home Minister Narottam Mishra on Monday (July 13) got emotional during the nomination rally of BJP candidate  Ashutosh Tiwari from Datia, ahead of the by-election for the assembly constituency. Mishra’s emotional appearance came days after his supporters blocked National Highway-44 following the BJP’s decision to field Ashutosh Tiwari instead of him for the bypoll. Mishra had earlier expressed speculation about his displeasure, saying he held “no resentment” over the party’s decision and would fulfil any responsibility to him. Netizens recorded the video of the event and shared it online which is going viral on social media platforms.

What Did Narottam Mishra Say at the Rally?

An emotional Mishra urged voters to compare the BJP’s governance with that of the Congress. He claimed that Datia had witnessed major improvements under BJP rule, particularly in tackling dacoit activity, and asked the opposition to seek votes based on its own performance. Dismissing reports of internal discord, Mishra said there was “no major conflict” within the BJP and announced that he would begin an intensive campaign from July 16. He promised to visit every village and every household in Datia to ensure Ashutosh Tiwari’s victory.

Why Was Mishra Denied the BJP Ticket?

According to party sources, the Madhya Pradesh BJP had recommended Mishra’s name for the Datia bypoll after discussions led by Chief Minister Mohan Yadav. However, feedback from the party’s central leadership reportedly suggested that Mishra’s electoral prospects were weaker than initially assessed. Sources also indicated that a bypoll victory could have strengthened Mishra’s political influence and potentially paved the way for his return to the state cabinet, making him another key power centre within the party.

Why Is the Datia Bypoll Important?

The Datia Assembly bypoll was necessitated after Congress MLA Rajendra Bharti lost his membership following his conviction in a cheating case. The Congress has fielded Kunwar Ghanshyam Singh, while the BJP has nominated Ashutosh Tiwari. Following the ticket announcement, Mishra’s supporters staged an 11-hour blockade on National Highway-44, leading to massive traffic disruption and attempts to shut markets in Datia. Despite the protests, Mishra has urged his supporters to back the BJP candidate and said he will carry out whatever responsibility the party assigns him. Polling for the bypoll is scheduled for July 30, while counting of votes will take place on August 3.
