NEET UG 2026 Paper Leak Protest: India’s biggest medical entrance examination, NEET UG 2026, has landed in controversy after allegations of a question paper leak surfaced online days after the exam was conducted. The National Testing Agency (NTA) on Tuesday officially cancelled the examination following a growing investigation into claims that the paper had circulated on Telegram before the May 3 test.
The move has triggered protests by student organisations and widespread outrage among candidates who appeared for the exam. Over 22.79 lakh students had taken NEET UG 2026 across India and at centres in 14 international cities.
The Centre has now handed the matter to the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) for a detailed probe into the alleged leak and related online circulation.
NEET UG 2026 Paper Leak Protest: What Triggered the NEET UG 2026 Paper Leak Controversy?
The controversy intensified after a viral video began circulating on X and other social media platforms. The video allegedly showed screenshots of Telegram chats in which users claimed to be selling the NEET UG 2026 question paper in exchange for money.
According to social media claims, some Telegram channels allegedly shared password-protected PDF files said to contain the NEET question paper as early as May 1 — two days before the examination. Reports suggested the files were being offered for nearly Rs 10,000.
The leaked content quickly spread across WhatsApp, Instagram and X before the original video was reportedly deleted.
One X user commented, “Can a Rs 10,000 Telegram message really buy someone a medical seat?”
What Did the NTA Say About the Viral Leak Claims?
Initially, the NTA denied the allegations and called the circulating content fake.
On May 6, the agency posted on X, saying, “This is fake. NTA is getting it investigated. We have details of where the question paper with the ID on the watermark was issued and to which student. If someone has faked this video, legal action will be taken.”
However, the situation changed after investigative agencies reportedly shared fresh findings with the government.
In its latest statement, the NTA said, “On the basis of inputs subsequently examined by the National Testing Agency and investigative findings shared by law enforcement agencies, the NTA, with the approval of the Government of India, has decided to cancel the NEET (UG) 2026 examination conducted on May 3.”
The agency further stated that the integrity of the examination process “could not be allowed to stand”.
What Did Investigators Find During the Probe?
According to reports, investigators found evidence suggesting that portions of the paper may have circulated before the exam.

The Rajasthan Special Operations Group reportedly recovered a handwritten suggestion paper containing 120 questions that allegedly matched the actual NEET UG 2026 exam. Reports claimed the document included:
- 90 Biology questions
- 30 Chemistry questions
Investigators are also examining Telegram groups, online payment records and digital communications linked to the alleged leak network. The government has directed the CBI to conduct a comprehensive inquiry into the matter.
