The India national cricket team, led by captain Suryakumar Yadav, won the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup 2026 after defeating New Zealand national cricket team in the final held in Ahmedabad on Sunday. The victory marked another major milestone for Indian cricket and gave the team its second ICC trophy under head coach Gautam Gambhir.
While speaking at the NXT Summit 2026 in New Delhi on March 12, Prime Minister Narendra Modi congratulated the Indian team and praised their historic achievement.
“India recently won the T20 World Cup 2026, and the entire country is celebrating the historic victory. In India, cricket is bigger than everything else. Whether you’re working in offices or corporates, no matter how much stress or how many deadlines you have to meet, people always find time to check the score when India is playing. This victory has brought immense joy to Indians,” Prime Minister Narendra Modi said.
India Creates History With Third T20 World Cup Title
With this triumph, India made history by becoming the first team to win the T20 World Cup three times and also successfully defend the title.
India’s first T20 World Cup victory came in 2007 under captain MS Dhoni. The team lifted the trophy again in 2024 under the leadership of Rohit Sharma, and the latest success in 2026 under Suryakumar Yadav further strengthened India’s dominance in the format.
Suryakumar Yadav also joined an elite group of Indian captains who have won a World Cup. The list includes legendary leaders Kapil Dev, MS Dhoni, and Rohit Sharma.
India’s Journey in the T20 World Cup 2026
India performed strongly throughout the tournament. The team remained unbeaten during the group stage and secured important victories, including a high-profile win against arch-rivals Pakistan national cricket team.

In the final, India delivered a powerful all-round performance against New Zealand. The batting lineup played aggressively, posting a massive total of 255/5 in 20 overs.
Sanju Samson once again led the charge with a brilliant 89-run innings. He was supported by Abhishek Sharma, who scored a valuable half-century, and Ishan Kishan, who also contributed with a fifty.
The Indian bowlers then completed the job by dismissing New Zealand for 159 runs, securing a convincing 96-run victory. Fast bowler Jasprit Bumrah played a key role with the ball, taking four wickets in the match.
