Leader of Opposition in the Lok Sabha and Congress leader Rahul Gandhi on Tuesday described the BJP’s victory in Bengal and Assam Assembly polls a “theft” of the mandate, and a big step forward in the saffron party’s mission to “destroy” Indian democracy.
He also urged the opposotion parties to put petty politics aside saying it is not about one party but for India.Â
In a post on X, Rahul Gandhi said, “Some in the Congress, and others, are gloating about TMC’s loss. They need to understand this clearly – the theft of Assam and Bengal’s mandate is a big step forward by the BJP in its mission to destroy Indian democracy.”
“Put petty politics aside. This is not about one party or another. This is about India,” he said.
His remarks came a day after Mamata Banerjee-led Trinamool Congress lost to the BJP in West Bengal.Â
On Tuesday, Banerjee announced that she would not resign from her post as she alleged irregularities and signalled a multi-pronged political and legal response.
“I will not resign, I did not lose, I will not go to Raj Bhavan…The question doesn’t arise. No. Now, I also want to say that we didn’t lose the election. It is their attempt to defeat us. Officially, through the Election Commission, they can defeat us, but morally we won the election,” she said during a press conference in Kolkata.Â
She said, “We did not fight BJP, we fought EC which worked for the saffron party.”
The BJP sweeped in West Bengal and dethroned the Trinamool Congress government.Â
Following her defeat, Rahul Gandhi came out in her support and asked party leaders not to gloat on her defeat.Â
On Monday, Rahul Gandhi had also dialed Mamata Banerjee and DMK chief MK Stalin, who had lost in West Bengal and Tamil Nadu.
He had also dialled TVK’s Vijay for his party’s victory in Tamil Nadu.Â
