Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman pledged a big infrastructure push on Sunday, February 1, 2026, while presenting her eighth consecutive Union Budget. The corridors are designed as “growth connectors” to link major urban and economic hubs with Tier-2 and Tier-3 cities.

The seven proposed high-speed rail corridors are:

  • Mumbai-Pune
  • Pune-Hyderabad

The budget outlined significant freight and waterways infrastructure. A new dedicated freight route will connect Dangkuni, West Bengal, to Surat, Gujarat. Furthermore, the government intends to open 20 additional national waterways over the next five years to promote environmentally sustainable cargo movement by transitioning freight from roadways to more energy-efficient water transport.

Yes, the budget highlighted eco-tourism. The government will develop sustainable mountain trails in Himachal Pradesh, Uttarakhand, Jammu and Kashmir, Araku Valley (Eastern Ghats), and Pudigai Malai (Western Ghats). Special wildlife tourist trails have also been announced, including turtle trails near nesting locations in Odisha, Karnataka, and Kerala, as well as bird-watching trails surrounding Pulicat Lake.

Sitharaman outlined six key areas for targeted intervention to accelerate and sustain economic growth:

  • Delivering a powerful push for infrastructure.
  • Ensuring long-term security and stability.
  • Developing city economic regions.

She stated these reflect the government’s commitment to maintaining the momentum of reforms.
