Republic Day 2026: On the eve of India’s 77th Republic Day, President Droupadi Murmu addressed the nation, highlighting key achievements in defence, economic reforms, women empowerment, and youth-led development. Her speech underlined India’s growing self-reliance and global stature, while paying tribute to the Armed Forces and citizens strengthening the republic.
Defence & Operation Sindoor
President Murmu lauded India’s strategic defence capabilities, citing last year’s Operation Sindoor, which targeted terror infrastructure following the Pahalgam attack. “Precision strikes destroyed terror centres, eliminating multiple terrorists,” she stated, emphasizing the role of India’s self-reliance in defence technology. The president also commended the vigilance of the three Armed Forces, police, and Central Armed Police Forces in maintaining national security.
Economic Reforms: GST & Labour Codes
Highlighting India’s economic progress, Murmu praised the Goods and Services Tax (GST), calling it “the most significant economic integration measure since Independence.” The implementation of GST has created a ‘One Nation, One Market’ system, while recent adjustments aim to strengthen efficiency further. She also pointed to the introduction of four Labour Codes, designed to improve worker welfare and accelerate enterprise growth across sectors.
Empowering Women Across Fields
President Murmu recognized the role of women in India’s development, noting over 10 crore women actively contributing through self-help groups. She observed that women are breaking traditional barriers in sectors ranging from agriculture to space, and self-employment to defence. The increasing participation of women voters adds to India’s democratic strength, making their involvement pivotal in shaping the republic.
Youth & Entrepreneurial Contributions
India’s youth population, the largest in the world, is driving innovation and global recognition. President Murmu highlighted contributions from young entrepreneurs, sportspeople, scientists, and professionals, emphasizing their role in enhancing India’s self-reliance and international presence. Their energy, she noted, is key to sustaining India’s growth trajectory and global competitiveness.
India as a Messenger of Peace
President Murmu concluded by reiterating India’s civilizational commitment to universal peace, describing the country as a “messenger of peace” in a world marked by conflict. Drawing from India’s traditions of prayer and harmony, she stressed that global security and humanity’s future are intertwined with the spread of peace, with India playing a vital role on the international stage.
