Rocket Attack in Manipur: A tragic rocket attack on a residential house in Manipur’s Bishnupur district has left two young children dead and their mother seriously injured, triggering protests and forcing authorities to suspend internet services across several districts.

The incident took place in the early hours of Tuesday in Moirang’s Tronglaobi area, a region located near sensitive hill boundaries. According to officials, a projectile believed to have been fired from nearby elevated areas struck a civilian house while the family was asleep.

The explosion caused severe damage to the house and left residents in panic. Authorities rushed the injured family members to a hospital, but the two children, a five-year-old boy and his infant sister, succumbed to their injuries.

Rocket Attack in Manipur: Government Suspends Internet Services in Five Districts

Following the attack, the Manipur government ordered an immediate suspension of internet and mobile data services in five districts, Imphal West, Imphal East, Thoubal, Kakching, and Bishnupur.

Officials said the three-day internet ban aims to control the spread of rumours and prevent further unrest. Authorities often use such measures in conflict-prone areas to maintain public order during sensitive situations.

Violence broke out shortly after news of the attack spread. Protesters gathered in several areas and expressed anger over the incident. Reports indicated that some demonstrators burned vehicles and blocked roads, forcing police to intervene to control the situation.

Security forces have increased patrols across vulnerable locations, and authorities continue to monitor the situation closely.

Residents staged protests in response to the attack, demanding strict action against those responsible. Demonstrators reportedly set fire to oil tankers and a truck near a petrol pump in the area.

Protesters also burned tyres near Moirang Police Station and damaged a temporary police post. The unrest forced authorities to deploy additional security personnel to prevent further escalation.

Police officials confirmed that the blast occurred around 1 am when the children and their mother were sleeping inside the house. The explosion left little time for escape, causing severe injuries to all three victims.

During search operations in nearby areas, security teams recovered another explosive device, raising fears about additional threats.

Rocket Attack in Manipur: Chief Minister Condemns Attack, Calls It ‘Assault on Humanity’

Manipur Chief Minister N. Biren Singh strongly condemned the attack and described it as an act of brutality.

He said the incident was a ‘barbaric act’ and called it “It is a direct attack on humanity and an attempt to disturb the peace that has been established in Manipur with great difficulty.”

Singh further stated, “I strongly condemn this in the strongest possible terms. There should be no doubt that those responsible will be identified, tracked down, and strict action will be taken against them under the law. Such terrorist acts will not be tolerated under any circumstances.”

He assured the public that authorities would identify those responsible and take strict legal action against them. The Chief Minister also appealed to citizens to remain united and avoid actions that could disturb peace.

Officials confirmed that the state government is providing medical care to the injured mother and support to the affected family. The Chief Minister also visited survivors and promised justice for the victims.

Rocket Attack in Manipur: Sensitive Location Raises Security Concerns

The affected village lies close to hill regions that witnessed intense ethnic clashes during 2023 and 2024. Authorities consider the area highly sensitive due to its proximity to locations where armed groups have been active in the past.

Security forces believe the projectile may have been fired from elevated terrain several kilometres away, suggesting the use of long-range weapons.

Investigators continue to examine evidence collected from the site, while security teams maintain strict vigilance across the district to prevent further incidents.

The latest attack has once again highlighted the fragile security situation in Manipur, where authorities continue efforts to restore lasting peace.
