Activist Sonam Wangchuk remains admitted to Safdarjung Hospital on Sunday after being shifted from Jantar Mantar a day earlier. The hospital said his condition is stable, but some of his blood test results remain slightly abnormal because of his prolonged hunger strike. However, his wife, Gitanjali J Angmo, has questioned the hospital’s treatment and claimed there are differences between the hospital’s potassium test and an independent lab report. She has also alleged that Wangchuk is being kept under illegal detention due to the heavy police presence at the hospital. Meanwhile, his personal doctor has also disputed the hospital’s claims, and CJP founder Abhijeet Dipke has begun his own hunger strike while confirming that the July 20 ‘Chalo Sansad’ march will go ahead.
What Is Sonam Wangchuk’s Current Health Condition?
Safdarjung Hospital said on Sunday that Wangchuk’s vital signs are stable, but some of his blood test results are still slightly abnormal because of the effects of his long hunger strike. Doctors from Safdarjung Hospital and AIIMS said he needs continuous medical treatment and round-the-clock monitoring to quickly deal with any complications that may arise. They added that he will remain under 24 hour observation.
Gitanjali J Angmo said she has lost trust in Safdarjung Hospital after noticing a difference in Wangchuk’s potassium test results. She claimed the hospital told the family his potassium level had fallen to 2.9, which can be dangerous, but did not mention the exact figure in its public health bulletin. She said an independent laboratory later found his potassium level to be 3.5, which is within the normal range.
Angmo also alleged that the hospital is not allowing the family to shift Wangchuk to a private hospital and described the situation as “illegal detention” because of the large number of police personnel deployed inside the hospital. She said she has moved the Delhi High Court seeking permission to transfer him and warned that the authorities would be responsible if anything happened to him.
“Shri Sonam Wangchuk is being given the required medical intervention at VMMC & Safdarjung Hospital. His vital parameters are stable at present; however, his blood parameters remain marginally altered, and considering the physiological stress and systemic effects of prolonged fasting, he requires continuous medical care under the close observation of a multidisciplinary team of experts,” the bulletin stated.

Wangchuk’s personal doctor, Dr Nitin Dighe, also questioned the hospital’s findings. He said his team had been monitoring Wangchuk for the past 20 days but had not been allowed to meet him after he was admitted. Dighe claimed that a blood sample taken by his team on Saturday showed Wangchuk’s potassium level was 4.8, which he said was normal. He questioned why the hospital reported a sharp drop and alleged that medical reports were not being shared with the family. He said he would conduct another independent blood test because neither he nor the family trusted the hospital’s findings.
“My team and I have been doing his checkups for the past 20 days. His advocates and we have not been allowed to meet him so far. His wife is here and they are allowing her. I asked them why they have kept him here, we were told that he is showing potassium deficiency. I had taken his blood sample at 3 pm yesterday and potassium was normal at that time. It was 4.8, higher than the normal value of 3.5. Now, they are saying the value has dropped. When his wife is asking for a report, they are not giving one to her. This is suspicious, so I am collecting his blood and taking it for a report. I will present the report to you. We do not trust the Govt lab,” Dighe said.
Is The July 20 March Still Happening?
The protest is demanding the resignation of Union Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan over alleged irregularities in exams such as the NEET paper leak, a judicial inquiry into the alleged exam scams and reforms to India’s examination system. Wangchuk joined the protest on June 28 and had been on an indefinite hunger strike before being admitted to hospital. Despite the recent police action, organisers say the ‘Chalo Sansad’ march to Parliament on July 20 will go ahead as planned.
