Suvendu Adhikari’s PA Shot: It is reported that an unknown gang has shot Chandranath Rath, the personal assistant to BJP’s leader Suvendu Adhikari, in an unexpected case that took place in Madhyamgram located in the district of North 24 Parganas, West Bengal on the late hours of Wednesday evening.
This tragic event happened very soon after the results of the West Bengal Legislative Assembly Election 2026, which took place on March 4, 2026. In this election, BJP gained majority with 156 seats in the 294-member legislative assembly.
What Happened in Madhyamgram?
BJP leader Suvendu Adhikari’s personal assistant Chandranath Rath was murdered in Madhyamgram region of North 24 Parganas district in West Bengal by unknown attackers late at night on Wednesday. This attack occurred after the BJP won the West Bengal Assembly Election 2026, where the party secured 207 out of 294 seats in total. Chandranath Rath was an associate of Adhikari, and he allegedly worked in managing election work in the areas of Nandigram and Bhabanipur.
How Did the Attack Take Place?
As per Koustav Bagchi, the leader of the BJP, the bike-wielding attackers allegedly tracked Rath’s white Scorpio car before stopping him in Doharia of Madhyamgram. The gun-wielding attackers allegedly started shooting at Rath when he was sitting in his car. The car’s driver was also wounded during the attack and was first rushed to a local hospital and then to Kolkata. A police official stated in various news reports that the gun-wielding attackers shot at Rath’s Scorpio car from both sides. As per doctors, Rath was wounded with bullet wounds on the chest and abdomen.
Police Suspect Planned Murder
As per statements given by police officers quoted in media reports, the assault seemed to have been well-planned and executed in an extremely precise manner. The police have indicated that Rath seems to have been the principal victim of the shooting incident. It seems that the assailants were experts since almost all the bullets were directed towards him. However, the motive for the assassination has not yet been officially disclosed.
Eyewitness Account of the Shooting
ANI reported that the attack was seen as “premeditated” and was done up-close by an attacker who used a motorcycle for transportation. In the witness’ version, the SUV belonging to Rath was stopped abruptly after it was halted. Afterward, a gunman riding a motorbike shot Rath and made a quick getaway. The eyewitness said he heard shots fired twice from around 10:30 to 11 pm at night.
BJP Workers Protest Outside Hospital
After the shooting, BJP supporters gathered near the hospital and chanted slogans against the governing party of All India Trinamool Congress. The murder case has caused political tension within the state, as the BJP has accused the deteriorating law and order situation in the state following the Assembly elections.
Suvendu Adhikari Reacts to PA’s Murder
In response to the event, Suvendu Adhikari said the BJP will hold its patience until the investigation concludes. “We don’t conclude anything now,” Adhikari said, adding to his statement a remark on the history of political violence in the state.
He also said that higher ranking police officers have promised a thorough investigation into the matter. Adhikari also advised the supporters of the BJP not to make the situation more troublesome by themselves but instead to stay peaceful during the time of the investigation.
