Actor-turned-politician Vijay officially began his tenure as Tamil Nadu Chief Minister by announcing a series of major public welfare and law enforcement measures immediately after taking oath in Chennai.
The Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK) founder signed his first official files on Sunday, approving 200 units of free electricity for domestic consumers, the formation of a dedicated women’s safety task force, and a statewide anti-drug trafficking initiative.
The announcements came shortly after his swearing-in ceremony, which marked a historic political shift in Tamil Nadu with the formation of the state’s first non-DMK and non-AIADMK government in nearly six decades.
Vijay Takes Oath as Tamil Nadu Chief Minister
Vijay took the oath as the Chief Minister of Tamil Nadu during a high-profile ceremony held at the Jawaharlal Nehru Indoor Stadium in Chennai. Tamil Nadu Governor R. N. Ravi administered the oath of office and secrecy. Nine ministers were also sworn into the cabinet alongside Vijay.
The event was attended by several national and regional leaders, including Rahul Gandhi, representatives from Left parties, VCK, IUML, and senior TVK members.

Soon after assuming office, Vijay signed three major policy-related files aimed at welfare and public safety.

One of Vijay’s first major announcements was providing 200 units of free electricity to domestic consumers. The move is expected to benefit lakhs of middle-class and lower-income households across the state by reducing monthly electricity expenses.

During his first address after taking the oath, Vijay declared the beginning of a new political phase focused on “real secularism and social justice.” He also stated that there would be no parallel power centres within the government and said he would remain the “only centre of power” in the administration.
Vijay thanked alliance partners, including Congress, Left parties, VCK, and IUML, for supporting TVK in forming the government. He also thanked children and young voters, saying they played a major role in influencing families to support his party during the election campaign.

The swearing-in ceremony carried emotional significance for Vijay’s family, especially as the event coincided with Mother’s Day.
His mother, Shoba Chandrasekhar, expressed confidence in his leadership and said, “Vijay will lead this well; I have full faith in him.”
Political analysts believe Vijay’s rise marks one of the biggest shifts in Tamil Nadu politics in recent decades, with TVK now preparing to prove its majority in the Assembly before May 13.
