Tamil Nadu Oath Ceremony Updates: After a dizzying political whirlwind, Tamil Nadu finally has a new government again. TVK leader Vijay has officially become the Chief Minister of Tamil Nadu, with 9 other MLAs sworn in as cabinet ministers.

Tamil Nadu Assembly Election 2026 Results

In the 2026 Tamil Nadu Assembly elections, the Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam, led by actor turned politician Vijay, claimed a resounding victory and won 108 seats. However, the party fell 10 seats short, as any political party or coalition needs 118 seats to form a government in Tamil Nadu.

Subsequently, coalition talks began with multiple political parties. The Indian National Congress (INC), which won 5 seats was the first one to tie up. The Communist Party of India (CPI) and Communist Party of India (Marxist) offered a total of 4 MLAs. While, the Viduthalai Chiruthaigal Katchi (VCK) and Indian Union Muslim League (IUML), that won 2 seats each, also tied up with TVK.

The Four Day Whirlwind: What Went Down After Election Results

While the TVK won the Tamil Nadu assembly, they lacked numbers. As a result, they couldn’t form the government, even though party president Vijay met with Tamil Nadu governor Rajendra Arlekar.

This led to heavy speculation, as the media and general public saw what unfolded with great interest. On Saturday, Vijay presented multiple letters of support to Arlekar and TVK was then formally invited to form the government.

Tamil Nadu Oath Ceremony: Key Highlights

The oath ceremony happened at Chennai’s Jawarhal Nehru Stadium and had multiple prominent guests, including senior Congress leader Rahul Gandhi, governor Rajendra Arlekar, actress Trisha Krishnan and more.

During the packed ceremony, a fervent Vijay promised to herald a ‘‘new era of real, secular, social justice. He also said that repaying the debt of gratitude to Tamil Nadu’s people was his main motive for entering politics.

However, not everything was sunshine and rainbows. In a scathing critique Vijay accused the previous DMK administration of ‘‘cleaning out the treasury” and revealed that MK Stalin’s tenure had left behind a massive debt of 10 lakh crore.

The New Cabinet: 9 MLAs Sworn In

Along with Vijay, 9 MLAs took oath at the Jawarhal Nehru Stadium. The new cabinet members are as follows:

  • P Venkataramanan: School Education

  • R Nirmalkumar: Electricity

  • Rajmohan: Scheduled Castes & Scheduled Tribes Welfare

  • Dr TK Prabhu: Portfolio not revealed

  • N. Anand: Municipal administration

  • Dr Arunraj KG: Revenue

  • K.A. Sengottaiyan: Public Works Department (PWD)

  • Selvi S. Keerthana: Portfolio not revealed

  • Aadhav Arjuna: Sports

As of now, all 9 cabinet members are from the TVK. Subsequent ministers will most likely be from the coalition’s allied parties.

Political Reactions

During and after the oath ceremony, multiple public figures felicitated Vijay. Prime Minister Narendra Modi said on the microblogging platform X, “Congratulations to Thiru C. Joseph Vijay on taking oath as Tamil Nadu Chief Minister. Best wishes for his tenure ahead. The Central Government will keep working with the Tamil Nadu Government to improve the lives of people.”

While Telangana CM Revanth Reddy and senior Congress leader Mallikarjun Kharge sent out separate congratulatory messages. Vijay also received messages of support from multiple film stars, including Kamal Haasan, Pawan Kalyan, Pooja Hegde and R. Madhavan.
