UP Weather Update Today: Massive Thunderstorm in Uttar Pradesh Leads to 89 Deaths – Check Out Cause, Affected Areas & More

A major thunderstorm in UP caused 89 deaths, with 53 people getting injured.

UP Weather Update: Heavy rains and thunderstorms recently caused 89 deaths and multiple other injuries in UP recently. Now, CM Yogi Adityanath has undertaken relief measures and announced that compensation will be provided within 24 hours. 

UP Weather Update Today

On Wednesday, a powerful thunderstorm, accompanied by lightning and heavy winds occurred in UP. The ensuing storm then killed 89 people and left 53 people injured. 114 animals also died as a result. The death poll is still rising.

The Thunderstorm’s Impact on Infrastructure and Property 

The thunderstorm caused massive damage by uprooting trees, collapsing walls and damaging houses. Mobile networks also vanished in several areas. Roads in multiple parts of Eastern and Western UP were blocked. 

UP Weather Today: Affected Areas of the Thunderstorm 

At first, the thunderstorm affected only 5 districts of UP which included Bhadohi, Fatehpur, Budaun, Chandauli and Sonbhadra. But Unnao, Bareilly and Pratapgarh districts were also affected. UP has a total of 75 districts.

Prayagraj, Mirzapur and Sant Ravidas Nagar in Bhadohi were some of the heavily hit areas. 

UP Weather Today: Check Death Toll Cities Wise

A death count of some cities is given below:

  • Prayagraj: 21 

  • Mirzapur: 10 

  • Sant Ravidas Nagar: 14

  • Fatehpur: 11 

As per the reports, death tolls of only these cities has been shared. The rest are still under investigation. 

Root Cause of the Thunderstorm

The root cause of the massive storm is thundersquall (a combination of squall and thunderstorm). Common causes of thundersqualls include weather disturbances, lightning strikes and heavy wind speeds. 

UP Government’s Response 

UP CM Yogi Adityanath has declared that compensation will be provided within 24 hours to families of all affected victims.

The Relief Commissioner’s office also took cognisance. “Due to bad weather on May 13, including storms, rain, hailstorm and lightning, reports of 89 deaths, 53 injured persons, 114 livestock losses and damage to 87 houses have been received in the state, which has been taken cognisance of by the Hon’ble Chief Minister”, their post on microblogging platform X said. 

Unconfirmed reports also suggest that Yogi personally directed district officials to meet the victims families’ and ensure that compensation is provided on time.
