In a major political development, Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK) chief C. Joseph Vijay has announced that his party will allocate its lone Rajya Sabha seat in Tamil Nadu to alliance partner Congress.The seat became vacant with the resignation of AIADMK leader C. Ve. Shanmugam from the Upper House after his win from the Mailam Assembly constituency in the recent state elections. The Election Commission had earlier announced the election schedule to fill the vacant seat through a bypoll.
Vijay declined to reveal the Alliance partner to contest the seat, but said they had “allocated the seat” to Congress as part of the TVK-led alliance in Tamil Nadu.
“The Rajya Sabha election is to be held in Tamil Nadu on the 18th of this month, a seat has been allocated to the All India Congress party, which is part of the alliance led by TVK in Tamil Nadu,” Vijay said.
The motion to allocate the seat was reportedly accepted by the alliance in a joint meeting of leaders. The political move is being seen to fortify coordination and smoothen the operations of the alliance in the Parliament.
Congress Set to Benefit in Upper House Numbers
Undoubtedly, TVK is emerging as the single-largest party in the Tamil Nadu Assembly. In fact alliance has the required numerical strength to comfortably secure the Rajya Sabha seat. Congress is widely expected to field a nominee, with reports suggesting internal discussions already underway.
Senior Congress leaders, including P. Chidambaram and Tamil Nadu in-charge Girish Chodankar, have held meetings in connection with the development. Chodankar indicated that the party would strengthen its representation in the Rajya Sabha through the Tamil Nadu seat.

Vijay’s decision is a strategic move to maintain trust and balance within the TVK-led alliance. By offering a national-level seat to Congress, TVK signals its intent to prioritise partnership stability ahead of future electoral battles.
