A Trinamool Congress (TMC) leader-cum-civic volunteer, Sahidul Miah, was reportedly found under a bed after angered villagers stormed his house over a housing scheme-related fraud case in West Bengal’s Mathabhanga I Block. The incident was caught on video and went viral on social media.
Miah was accused of collecting money from the poor in the area on the pretext of allotting houses from a state housing scheme. They said he kept taking between ₹20,000 and ₹5,000 as “cut money” from various beneficiaries, but no housing allotments were handed over.
A crowd of women had agitated outside his residence seeking refunds as far back as May 25. But the agitation erupted on Wednesday day when more villagers surrounded his house, trapping him inside.

How was TMC leader discovered?
As the situation became more worsened, Miah reportedly moved into a bedroom and hid under a cot to avoid facing the protesters. Police reached the spot after being alerted and later pulled him out from under the bed before escorting him to safety.
Officials confirmed that Miah has been taken to Mathabhanga police station, and an investigation into allegations of extortion and fraud is underway. Authorities are examining claims that nearly ₹8 lakh was collected from residents.
The incident has added fuel to ongoing political attacks over alleged “cut money” practices in West Bengal. Opposition leaders have circulated the video, while the TMC has maintained that it has no role in any illegal collection of funds and that action will be taken against wrongdoing if proven.
